Root SystemUI.apk

i need help with editing systemui.apk, for the 4g icon on the status bar i want to use a different logo but when i tried to do it myself i almost bricked the phone. im new to rooting and i dont want to mess my phone up. the icons i want to use are the at&t ones in res drawable mdpi. so can someone please help me?
 
Okay its easy to modify files

Get root explorer

Navigate to system/app and look for systemUI.apk extract it go to rez drawable mdpi and change the mpcs 4g to the one you want :]

ok one last question when you extract it how do you get back to an apk file?
 
Yea a lot of people do not realize that the file extension APK is simply a generic Android specific archive extension. No different than naming it .zip .rar .7z... hell, you could rename an APK file systemUI.monkeynipples and then open it with WinRAR, and it will still open it and extract everything perfectly ;)

Then of course you would have to answer questions from anyone using your computer why you have files with that extension ;)
