[T-Mobile] New Phone

I have a LG Thrive which I had unlocked and rooted myself a while back and with super-user status I could get inside the phone via USB cable and download to and copy from the phone. Now I have upgraded to a NEXUS GT which is unlocked but stock (not rooted). It is running 4.1.2 software and I keep getting the​
 
If you aren't rooted you won't be able to see all the system files you are referring to.

I just updated to Jelly Bean 4.2 and would like to root my phone. I am only using it as a "T-Mobile pre-paid" with no data plan. I've read about the manual and "one step" ways to root this phone and would like to do the easiest way as not to brick it. NOTE: This phone is already unlocked and some root methods do a "unlock and root" so I just need a simple root method. Any suggestion would be helpful.
 
the phone is unlocked in a carrier sense.

The bootloader is still locked unless you've unlocked it. That is what the root guides are referring to when they say "unlock and root"

I'll report this to be moved in to the All Things Root section of the G Nex and/or you can cruise that forum as well.
