[T-Mobile] Possible to use Note 2 without activating it?

Hi!

So I'm currently on Sprint and I'm going to switch to T-Mobile next month. I ordered the Note 2 from T-Mobile and it just arrived, but I'm not going to activate it until January because that's when my Sprint contract is up. So I was wondering if it would be possible to use the Note 2 without activating (or rooting) it because I really really want to play with it

Also, be sure that you take the sim card out of the phone before you turn it on. If you don't, it may begin the activation process.
