Root T-mobile throttle work-around?

Here's our tethering policy - http://androidforums.com/site-updat...g-policy-our-approach-some-other-content.html

We can't keep up with every contract in every region and if carriers don't allow tethering, we expect them to enforce it.

So, please don't try to abuse your carrier privileges, let your conscience be your guide, but other than that, we have nothing to say on the matter.

Because this is a gray area, staff cannot participate here to help you though.

That all said - this is not a political debate thread.

If anyone wants to discuss ins and outs of tethering, fine.

If anyone wants to argue that it's evil, please don't, we have other forums to argue about those sorts of things.

Cheers and thanks for asking! :)

Thanks for the reply. I figured that this was more of a gray area.

Could this work with our phone?

p.s. If this is something that shouldn't be on the forums, please let me know, and I will remove it immediately. I'm posting it here simply because I can't post it on XDA yet (needs 10 posts).
The nexus 4 mobile hot spot works out of the box. I dont believe you would need to do that at all.
That being said if you tether too much they do know, probably by the useragent of your browser.

Sure, the N4 has the feature stock. However, on the TMo network, webpages will redirect to a page asking you to purchase the service. There is a workaround by modifying the user agent string. Also, the mods linked would get around data caps for unlimited full speed data.

It seems too in depth for me to try without dedicating a significant amount of time. It looks awesome and it would be worth a try after backing up

I'm looking more into the data throttling work around. I think it's rediculous that they supposedly offer "unlimited high speed data" but still throttle you on those plans...

That being said, once I get my phone, I may try to test these things out. If I get a workaround working, I will let everyone know.

I prowled around using Virtuous Studio Ten and so far, the Nexus 4 is already set up exactly as the linked guide instructs. When I tested the tethering, I did not get redirected to a T-Mobile upsell page and it did not create any new files (such as TetheringProvision.apk). I was able to stream movies without any issues.

I am having a bunch of trouble decompiling the services.jar, so I can't comment on that portion. I'll update if/when I figure it out.

Okay, I figured out what I was doing wrong with the services.jar and was able to decompile it.

There are some small differences between the N4's files and the Galaxy SIII's and I cannot even make a guess on whether or not the data throttling tweak will work. I have no idea if the added command, "const-wide/16 p1, 0x0" is specific to that particular phone or what. I don't get even remotely near the 5GB cap, so I probably won't be trying this anytime soon.

If you want to see what the N4's code looks like, I took a couple of screenshots:
