Help T-moble Prepaid/Google Voice/SMS/GrooveIP setup/questions

OK, so I got a Galaxy Nexus from Google, ported my Virgin Mobile number to Google voice, got a t-mobile sim activation kit, and got on their now famous $30 plan.

So far generally pretty happy with it, however, I'm running into problems that either need tweaking or a reconfiguring of how I do things. Since my number I've had for awhile now is my Google Voice number people calling in get ported over to my random t-mobile account. I've tried talkatone and grooveip, with grooveip so far actually being better for me personally.

My main issue comes with SMS. I know going through google voice as I currently am I don't get MMS, which isn't that big of a deal, however, using Google Voice for SMS is a pain. It isn't very robust, and breaks conversations up randomly, and there isn't any way to keep people's conversations as one normal string like most sms apps. I have tried using the standard messenger app but either get a weird number coming back as their number which isn't their actual number. It also won't show their name, instead a +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx number, again which isn't there number.

So, my "solution" I think is to perhaps port my long time number over to t-mobile (stinks as I just payed $20 to google to port) and then get a new google voice number. I think then I can still use GrooveIP to make my calls, although I think the people would see my new google number not the one I want them to. But SMS and MMS would work again and since in theory I wasn't trying to make a lot of phone calls in the first place this may work.

I'm just a little hesitant that I may have overlooked something seeing as I thought I had my bases covered before this switch and feel like I got myself a bit snagged. Sorry this is so long, and perhaps confusing, but figured I'd throw it out there and see what people thought, or if they had any suggestions.

Thanks again,

I'm confused. I sort of have the second setup you mentioned - I activated with T-Mo prepaid and then port my number to it, so if I want to make data calls I have to use my GV number. But I have no issues using SMS, certainly none of the ones you mentioned. I see the right number, but what I find really odd is you are saying Google Voice doesn't thread your texts? I don't see how this could have anything do with where your number resides, since either way you're still using Google Voice for texts.

Edit: Okay, now I see what you mean. It keeps your threads together for each day, but break it up for different days.

Are you using the "Google Voice" app instead of the "Message App"? The former will get the messages directly to your Google voice number and the latter will use your TMobile cellphone number
