Going to be in Asia for a few weeks. Have 2 questions.
1)Because there will be no signal is there a way to turn off the phone & Data radios? Don't want to lose all my battery searching. I will be using wifi.

2) Any one have experience using Google Voice to call and text from overseas? Anything I need to be aware of to avoid surprises?

I am rooted S-off and running G60madman's AngryBear Rom.

So great to have a community as helpful as this one.

1. That's what airplane mode is for. It turns off the radios :D It should work on wifi too.

2. Not sure about this one. You likely won't be able to receive calls, only send calls.

I don't want to turn off Wifi, just the radios for the carrier. Airplane mode turns off ALL radios including wifi.
I would like to be able to use wifi.

I figured calls might not work, be interesting to see if texting will.

What you do its turn on airplane mode then turn back on Wi-Fi. At that point it will just be the Wi-Fi on. I used to do it all the time with my Triumph.

You can also download talkatone to connect your voice account to send and receive calls and texts.works great!

Sipdroid, in conjunction with GV and pbxes.org could get your phone to receive calls via wifi, but this will eat up lots of battery. Unless you really want to receive phone calls, I wouldn't recommend this.

As for receiving sending texts, I was in China last year. Sending/receiving over wifi is fine using Google voice.

I have an Obihai 202 at home. I installed the obitalk app to make calls to the US (in conjunction with Google Voice). Hence free phone calls to the US while in China, as long as I can get good wifi (need consistent 500kbps).

At the same time, we use Onesuite.com voip app to make "international" phone call. Ironically it's cheaper to call "from the US" via Onesuite to Shanghai China instead of calling from a hotel in Beijing to Shanghai.

The downside, of course, you need to have an Obihai device and you need to open account, add money to Onesuite.

Airplane mode. You can turn WiFi back on without turning 3G/Service on.

Texting works fine via Google Voice overseas (tested in India and England!). Just be wary of time differences. :P Don't know too much about calling though. All of my close friends are available over Skype.
