Taking the leap. Getting an LG esteem! a few questions?

Taking the leap. Getting an LG esteem! a few questions?

I am getting rid of my Huawei ascend, and getting an LG Esteem 4G for my metro PCS service.

As I did when I first came to these forums and got a lot of help last year, (Thanks to Jazziette in the Ascend forum) I now need an LG guru!

Here are my basic questions

1: Root: What's the easiest way to root this phone. (I got used to icarus with my ascend, and also installed my own ringtones, startup screen, and sounds. I want to do that with my LG too) and what are my root options?

2: Battery life: I have heard nightmare stories about the battery life. and they vary. some say 3-4 hours talk time, others say 5-6. what are the tips and tricks that can help me extend battery life or should I just give up and get an extended battery with the bulky cover?

3: The price I have been quoted at my Metro PCS store for the LG Esteem is $299. Is that a good price, or is there a way to buy it somewhere else and then have them activate it?

4: Any other cool stuff? I like a stripped down, lean mean fighting machine, with no bloat and no fluff.

Thanks!

Papamalo,

LG newbie.

There's 2 ways to root. One being Root Only

Or a Root and Clockwork recovery all in one
Both are one click roots.

Battery life isn't that bad if you use the stock application manager to keep apps killed. I normally get 10-13 I would say. With 2x Battery saver or an alike app you can get 14-18 hours.

The price at the time of purchase is 350+ taxes. Then you get a 50 dollar mail in rebate. But WireFly has it for 299+taxes out the door and LetsTalk has it for 279+taxes.

We have ROMs and over clock kernels that reach up to 2.1GHz and also CM9 in the works and have themes. Also we have PlayfulGod. :D

What would you recommend? both the clockwork recovery and root, or just the root? what's the diff?

Thanks again.

well since we have gingersteem, just install cwm and backup your stock rom, than flash gingersteem or ginger extreme, and both are already deodex and rooted with speed tweak and all.

If you want to flash roms just do the all in one.

I did the root only one but that's because we didn't have a cwr yet.

Also from the replies in my topic ("Leaning toward Esteem"), I've learned that the Esteems now are coming with version C of the firmware that's unrootable so you have to downgrade to version B. There's a topic in the Esteem All Things Root board that has a walkthrough on how to downgrade.

So here I am unboxing my shiny new esteem.
I installed mobileLG drivers as prompted, and installed them
now I am getting an error window "automatic USB mode change has failed" and I can open the folders in windows explorer (I use XP Pro on a dell optiplex GX620) but the esteem doesn't connect using the LG drivers.
Solutions?

thanks!

I already answered this in the other thread that you started. No need to double post since it will not get you an answer any faster.

Actually, I finally installed the drivers, opened the console, on both mods, (RZR and CWM), finally rooted the phone, (or so the console said) only to discover that I have ZVC (version "c" of the firmware) and not ZVB, (Version "b" of of the firmware)
I am now told that I will have to downgrade the firmware from C to B in order to root the phone.

OK, now I'm scared. have you seen the process? it's like raiders of the lost ark. I'll give it a shot anyway.

Thanks!

Actually it's a pretty simple process.

I also will be taking the leap to the esteem from the indulge.

One question to rooted/rom/kernel users that use this phone WITHOUT an extended battery... How is the battery life? I kind of dont want to lug around another phone with a big battery and I also dont like that humpback look... not that i care about the look, I just want to be able to have a nice decent case and with extended batteries most they the time you cant have one.

And big thanks to the gentleman who put up those links to get this phone for a cheaper price, i was going to walk into metro tomorrow like an idiot and buy it from them smh lol (i live in palm bay too)

The battery life is pretty good with the stock battery. Depending on use you can get up to 18 hours out of it, especially if you use Juice Defender.
