Help Talk and Surf on 3G at the Same Time!?

So, I am well aware of this feature for GSM networks and of course because of the AT&Ts ads, but I have been trying this out with the Rezound on various connections.

I knew already that LTE phones were able to talk and surf, so I was not surprised that I could do it on an LTE connection or when I was connected to WiFi. However, much to my surprise, when I put my phone in CDMA only mode I can still talk and surf.

I have not been able to test this feature out in an area where there is no LTE. Anyone, without LTE coverage been able to have success with this?

(I thought maybe for a second that something magical happened with the CDMA gods so I tried this out with my wife's new iPhone 4S, but it did not work...)

Not all lte chips are able on 3g. Apparently it's an htc thing.

HTC is the only oem to offer it, but it's not their property. There was talk awhile back of Verizon having the ability to do this on all of their phones, but with LTE coming out, they haven't really taken the opportunity to push it.

I can't figure out why this is not pushed as the flagship phone. This phone has a lot of advantages over the RAZR and this is just another example of something that is not advertised well related to the Rez.

Verizon 3G uses CDMA2000 radios with EV-DO (evolution data optimized) for a data standard.

SVDO is an update to the EV-DO spec that allows for simultaneous 1x 3G data + digital voice at the same time. Of the two CDMA carriers in the US, only Verizon offers it and only on a few models.

SVDO isn't part of the LTE spec. That the Bolt and Rezound offer LTE and SVDO is more a matter of manufacturing convenience with how the radio chips are laid out and used.

^What that said is that only handsets with very advanced radio chips get the special SVDO 3G feature.

Hope this helps! :)

PS - Yes, 1x (aka 1xRTT) is really 3G (just slower than "normal" 3G), not 2.5G etc etc - per the ITU spec body who makes all of the "G" definition decisions. ;)

I'm really glad you posted that excellent explanation and the references. Thanks.

FWIW, my rezound is both my home phone and internet connection. It is bluetooth linked to a Panasonic wireless phone, serving up hotspot connectivity for my laptop and desktop. I can talk to someone via bluetooth while I surf the web. All of the radios (3G/4G, bluetooth and wifi hotspot) are running full tilt and playing well together. It never get over 112 degrees with all that going on.

My iPhone 4 can only hotspot and talk at the same time on the AT&T network. Adding bluetooth to the mix overheats it and the hotspot will shut down and requires a reboot to fix.

I do admit that the hotspot app on the rezound is a bit flaky but I'm pretty sure it's a software issue since USB tethering is rock solid while I talk and surf.

Droid 1? no that didn't have talk and data simultaneously. You must be on WiFi. Any phone can be on WiFi and talk at the same time.

If you still have an OG Droid... Try this:
1 Put your phone in browser mode, no Wi-Fi, go to a page
2 Call someone on speakerphone
3 Use the home key to toggle back to browser
Worked for me

Hmm that makes absolutely no sense since verizons network didn't support this until 4g...maybe its cached websites? I don have the original droid tho so Idk
