Help Talkatone or?

Hello,

Total newbie to the 'smartphone' arena, so please excuse me if my question(s) seem very basic.

Short history - traded a very old Fujitsu notebook for the Huawei Ascend. Do not have a carrier(it is a Metro phone) and do not get cell service where I am(radio quiet zone). I am assuming this phone has not been rooted or even 100% sure what that means or entails.

Objective - is to use available wi-fi to make and receive calls. I have tried uploading Talkatone, but to no avail. I do have an active Gmail account with voice and talk.

According to the information on the phone itself, I have Android OS version 2.2.2

Anyway to get Talkatone up and running on this thing, or another 'free' app that would work? If not, what paid app would you suggest?

Any and all help would be appreciated!

try talkatone apk for armv5 or armv6 phones here: Talkatone for Android (side loading version)

You first have to download Google Voice from the Playstore and sign up for an account. Then you can log into Talktone with your Google Voice account by clicking on the Talkatone app and selecting your account when it shows up on the Talkatone intro screen. Works flawlessly on the Nexus 7 tablet.
