Hi guys. I joined just to say thanks. I followed your advice about setting up a TalkTalk POP3 account on my HTC Desire and it works.
Specifically I set my email address and user name as the same.
My password was the standard TalkTalk access one, the one I use with Outlook Express.
I used for incoming: mail.talktalk.net and for outgoing smtp.t-email.co.uk. Removed Login tick.
And it worked. :)
I've 'thanked' some people above.

One question: if I'm at friends and I have both wifi and 3G enabled, can I actually send or will I have to get their router password? This is almost entirely an academic question; I don't go to friends to send emails!

WiFi will always take over from 3G so you would need your friends ISP's outgoing email server details.

Or just disconnect from WiFi when you want to send the email, unless T-Mobile allow you to connect to their outgoing server from any connection in which case you wont have to change anything.

Not being on T-Mobile, I wouldnt really know.

Give it a try either way.

thankyou very much this info worked straight away brillant thanks to everyone else too

Make sure you untick the "Login Required" box when entering your outgoing mail server, and enter the server below depending on what network you use.
Vodafone --- smtp.vizzavi.co.uk or send.vodafone.net

That should sort your email woes out.

The vodafone one didn't work for me - I use the smtp.360.com server which vodafone recommend. You have to register but it works for me. :)

Thanks folks. First post but it has sorted the issue. It is, however, a bit of a clunky way to work - though I suppose I don't send many emails from the phone at home - but I guess when you're using WiFi when out & about, using the O2 (in my case) or the Tiscali settings won't work?

Perhaps it's time to migrate fully to Gmail?

I've been using smtp.360.com as recommended by Vodafone UK. The server seems to frequently been out of service though. Can someone recommend and alternative outbound server which will allow me to send email whether connected through the mobile network or wifi.
Previously someone recommended the following however it seems vodafone have closed these servers now.
Vodafone --- smtp.vizzavi.co.uk or send.vodafone.net

Thanks

Hi, I have read all the posts i can find on this issue but still can't manage to send email from my talktalk account on my desire (can receive incoming mail). I am on the three network, have got wifi turned off on the handset, have used the smtp.three.co.uk server, the only point I'm having trouble following is the 'login required' field, I untick this but when I press 'next', I get a warning: 'cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding.' Have tried finishing setup anyway but when i go back into settings the login required field is ticked again. i have the server port set to 25 in case that's relevant. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

This all seems a bit odd to me. I have my email set up to use the pop3 and smtp server of my email provider, and both work fine on 3g (etc) or wifi. Two different email accounts both working in this way.

I'm just amazed that people still use ISP provided email accounts when a decent Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo account is free for anyone to use and has none of the above problems...

let alone the problems you'll encounter should you wish to change ISP....

Also on talktalk and use their webmail service. Am I correct in thinking that I can simply go online when I get my phone and access my email account without worrying about and pop or stmp settings? After all, I can currently access it from any computer - I don't use outlook or anything, just the webmail service, as I said.

I understand that I won't be notified by my phone when I recieve emails, I will have to go online to check manually, but I can live with that.

Yes but it's a horrible user experience viewing webmail through phone browser.

Seems an odd way to access your email when there is a fine email application built into the phone.

Fair enough, if i want to use the functionality of my phone it looks like i'm going to be forced down that path in any case, but would have helped in the short term to be able to use both accounts until I'd fully migrated to gmail (or other). It still frustrates the life out of me that when, in theory, I can use my phone to send and receive emails via talktalk, I can only get it to receive. Is it to much to hope that something that should work, does work? (Especially something which works on my ipod with no problems at all. I've still got 12 months+ before my next phone but only 6 months after going through the iphone and higher bill vs HTC and cheaper bill decision, I currently just wish I'd forked out the extra cash.)

Granted but changing my email address and the subsequent of telling everyone and every mailing list and website my new address seems a hassle too. Don't have my phone yet so I don't know how bad using webmail would be compared to using the phone app.

The benefits of setting up the app outweighs the swapping of address then you reckon ?

I think you misunderstand.

I use my own domain name host for email.. however the company blocks me from using their server for outgoing email unless connected through their service to prevent spammers. Therefore I still have the outbound email issues.
I've yet to find a host for my domain who does not impose this restriciton.. and I've no wish to use a generic hotmail/gmail account for my default email address especially when I pay for my own domain name anyway. :)

Gmail actually has some very clever mail forwarding tools built in that allows you to pick up email's from another domain and even send emails using gmail so they appear to be coming from your other email address.

Initially yes swapping to (gmail or similar) might seem painful but in the long term life becomes so much easier ;)

I have managed to get my phone to send messages from my talktalk address, but using gmail's smtp settings.

-I logged into gmail and in the settings, selected 'accounts and imports'
-In the 'Send mail as' option, I registered my talktalk address.
-I was then sent a verification e mail.
-I then went to the e mail settings on my phone,
-I kept the pop.talktalk.net setting for incoming mail (including talktalk address and password).
-For the smtp settings, I entered;
-smtp.gmail.com
-selected 'security type' SSL
-'sever port' 465
-clicked the 'Login Required' and used my gmail account username and password

These settings are working for me over wifi and 3g without needing to change any settings.

Hope this helps.

I had exactly the same problem - it said talktalk did not support authentication. So all I did was untick the box that said Login required on the OUTGOING server settings page. And then....... it just worked! Have tested it with a test mail and all working fine!

Hope this helps you too.

Ahh I think the penny has dropped. I fairly recently changed home computers, my new laptop doesn't have Outlook so I just use talktalk webmail, but on my old PC I did use Outlook with the same email address and had to set that up with POP3 and SMTP settings, so if I use those same settings on my phone as you describe above, it should work with my same address?

If so, that's great. My phone should be arriving tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out soon eh? :)

Just set up a Gmail account (via my computer);
I've successfully imported my talktalk inbox. :)
New emails sent to my talktalk account appear in my Gmail inbox. :)
I can send emails from my Gmail account I can reply to emails sent to my talktalk account. :)
So far so good - as long as it all works on my Desire I'll be laughing.

A couple of glitches - emails still appear in my talktalk inbox but it always says '0 new messages' when I log in and new emails appear as already read. Annoying, but if I'm going to use (superior) Gmail from now on, doesn't matter that much.

I've asked Gmail to mark my emails as sent from my talktalk address but they don't, they say they come from Gmail, again an irritation rather than something that stops my mails from working.

hopefully, I will find a solution to these glitches; if anyone knows the fixes, please feel free to share them! lol

Hi JayJay,

Have you set up Gmail to be able to send messages as your talktalk address?

You should get an e mail asking you to validate the request and then your talktalk address should appear in the 'Send Mail as' section in Setting ~ Account and Imports.

Then when you write a new message, you should be able to select the talktalk address to send from.

I have tested it on mine and is working.

I haven't imported my talktalk mail into Gmail yet, so not sure about the problems with the 'read' messages you are getting in your talktalk inbox. Is this still in webmail?
