Hi guys. I joined just to say thanks. I followed your advice about setting up a TalkTalk POP3 account on my HTC Desire and it works.
Specifically I set my email address and user name as the same.
My password was the standard TalkTalk access one, the one I use with Outlook Express.
I used for incoming: mail.talktalk.net and for outgoing smtp.t-email.co.uk. Removed Login tick.
And it worked.![]()
I've 'thanked' some people above.
One question: if I'm at friends and I have both wifi and 3G enabled, can I actually send or will I have to get their router password? This is almost entirely an academic question; I don't go to friends to send emails!
Make sure you untick the "Login Required" box when entering your outgoing mail server, and enter the server below depending on what network you use.
Vodafone --- smtp.vizzavi.co.uk or send.vodafone.net
That should sort your email woes out.

Also on talktalk and use their webmail service. Am I correct in thinking that I can simply go online when I get my phone and access my email account without worrying about and pop or stmp settings? After all, I can currently access it from any computer - I don't use outlook or anything, just the webmail service, as I said.
I understand that I won't be notified by my phone when I recieve emails, I will have to go online to check manually, but I can live with that.
I'm just amazed that people still use ISP provided email accounts when a decent Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo account is free for anyone to use and has none of the above problems...
let alone the problems you'll encounter should you wish to change ISP....
Port 465 might help.. I'm not on 3 so can't be sure.
Yes but it's a horrible user experience viewing webmail through phone browser.
Seems an odd way to access your email when there is a fine email application built into the phone.

Granted but changing my email address and the subsequent of telling everyone and every mailing list and website my new address seems a hassle too. Don't have my phone yet so I don't know how bad using webmail would be compared to using the phone app.
The benefits of setting up the app outweighs the swapping of address then you reckon ?

I have managed to get my phone to send messages from my talktalk address, but using gmail's smtp settings.
-I logged into gmail and in the settings, selected 'accounts and imports'
-In the 'Send mail as' option, I registered my talktalk address.
-I was then sent a verification e mail.
-I then went to the e mail settings on my phone,
-I kept the pop.talktalk.net setting for incoming mail (including talktalk address and password).
-For the smtp settings, I entered;
-smtp.gmail.com
-selected 'security type' SSL
-'sever port' 465
-clicked the 'Login Required' and used my gmail account username and password
These settings are working for me over wifi and 3g without needing to change any settings.
Hope this helps.
