Help "Tap To Compose" SMS Box Grayed Out

This has been driving me nuts for along time. Seems like everyday when I come home from work I have issues trying to text message. When I try to send a text "Tap to Compose" is grayed out in landscape mode, if I flip to portrait it's not grey but when I type nothing is actually typed.

I have to reboot my phone to text again. I use native HTC text app.

Am I the only one with this issue?

Text greyed, multiple times per day, even when I rotate the screen, it is not greyed out, but it will not accept any input. I have to kill a few unrelated running tasks, back completely out of text messaging a few times, then it will work. You do not have to re-boot. Android 2.2

Am using native text messaging application. Installed no other app that effects texting. ( attached ). This problem is present on the eris too.

Same here too...sometimes after going back and retrying a few times it works...but today was the first time I had to reboot phone.....is there a fix?
I am using Moto Droid with stock texting app...is there abetter texting app to use instead?
