Task Killers - The good, the bad and the ugly

Ummm guys, the topic for this thread is App killers, not the iPhone or how it does stuff. Let's try to stay on topic. :)

Thanks

And here I read the title and thought the topic of this thread was you, Damned ;-)

talk about an iPhone Killer...jeesh!

thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on this subject...i've just got my eris and am trying to learn all the ins and outs.... i'm truly loving it!

hope you can continue to teach me new things ... just uninstalled taskiller...

Which is better than having to hit "back" 100 times when done surfing the internet and trying to back out of the browser

you could just open up a new window to your homepage. then close ur current window, reopen the home page and hit back ONE time.

BTW ofthedamned you have quite the fanbase!

LMAO! Should I tell them that I am already taken?

I read that other thread about you the other day. How do you not get creeped out?

Thanks for sharing what you know. I've followed advice from you (and others), and even though I considered my self somewhat "in the know" I learn something everyday I come here!

I have renamed the thread something a little more appropriate. I suggest we steer it back on topic if you want it to stay open...

...whaddya say we leave the lady alone and start talking about the phones huh?

I've tried it every which way there is and my phone definitely runs better when using ATM. No lag, no force closings, nothing but what I would expect the phone to do.

There are just too many programs that stay open, using too much ram, for me to believe that somehow the system runs better on it's own. Of course, I can clearly see it when I restart my phone and every program on the phone is running vs. when I use ATM to shut them down.

So, do what makes you happy. Until someone comes along with proof (facts), we're stuck with nothing more than conjecture.

I'd be curious to see some stats on what you're using. List of apps and how you exit out of them. Just to see if there is something causing a problem.

Got rid of my Task Panel a week ago. The last few days my battery hasn't been below 60% by evening - it comes off the charger at 6am every morning. I think the automatic task killer, while saving some battery by closing apps, was using more battery to close them each time I put the phone to sleep. I am simply amazed that I can now go 2+ days with my Eris.

Of course everyone will do what they want, but I would suggest that everyone try to go a week without a task killer. If nothing else, just to see what happens. I've just become even more satisfied with my Eris.

Ha send all these people with OCD about killing task to task killer rehab...show them a life without constantly checking to see how much memory you have available.

the beauty of advanced task manager is...you can set the intervals to 30 or 60mins etc. so, it automatically kills the task you want. i`ve had it (and so do 4 of my co-workers, i managed there phones) for about 2 weeks. in that time i have yet to actually go into the app to kill task. it does it for me. or i can shake it :)
but since i`ve loaded it my phone runs smoother.
cause when i go to use it, nothing is running.

Then I'm guessing that would exclude you from said group of ocd task killers? ;)

I missed this earlier. That is a great tip. Fast and easy way to close the browser.

I'm here to talk about stuff for my eris... i sincerely hope your comment wasn't directed at my post.

I'm going to take your one week challenge but I'm also going to start a topic for people to list resource hog apps. The one thing that I'm getting is that my phone gets VERY bogged down at times and that's when I go in to kill the processes. Then the phone is back to it's speedy self.

I am interested to see your findings. :)

When a process like the browser is minimized it is idle and draws no CPU time from the phone. You should not have to exit the browser at all, atleast I have not exited mine for three weeks and it hasn't slowed down...

I don't know if the browser on the Droid functions differently than the one on the Eris, because they are two different browsers. I also honestly have no way of arguing with the CPU usage of the browser as I have no idea how to check it. I will say that the browser does continue to use battery and memory when minimized. So on those two things alone it is a good idea to back out of it instead of just hitting home.

Click on a link (so it starts loading) then click on the home link. Wait a couple minutes and click on the browser, you will notice the page has not loaded and it hasn't moved.

At least on the Droid if its minimized its not using CPU power.

Also download task manager and minimize the browser and watch the CPU % you will see browser staying at 0% while taskmanager may ramp from time to time from 5 - 15%

And Spare Parts can tell you how long things are in wake lock (keeping the phone from going to sleep) and how much CPU time said program is using. On average my browser using a total of 2-3 mins out of hours of use time using system CPU time (sleep mode browser activation)

If the website your on doesnt auto refresh, your not going to use extra CPU and ram.

Oh yes and the total time the browser is in wake lock (active while screen is off?) 9s so far with well over an hour of browsing.

Okay...so I've been without ATK for one day now and I've been so tempted to put it back on when my phone gets really bogged down. I back out of all apps so according to what has been stated above, I must have an app that is hogging CPU. I think that a piggyback thread needs to be started so that people can list apps that they know are resource hogs.

Battery has been about the same for me I think...it's not usually an issue because I always charge mid-day on my commute home. I'm more concerned with a speedy phone. I do know that when I used ATK and my phone started crawling...I'd kill all processes except for mail, messages, and the other notification type programs and I'd be speeding along immediately.
