I just got my phone in Wednesday and I was wondering if there is a task manager app that would allow me to kill everything going on in the background that isn't needed for the phone to function

I used to have a Samsung fascinate before this and it had a built in widget that allowed me to press a button on my home page and kill all apps in the background

I have Watchdog (lite). It doesn't kill apps indiscriminately, it notifies you of "bad actors", and lets you kill just them.

go to developer options at the bottom of settings... look towards the bottom in the "apps" sections, there are 3 options one is "destory every activity as soon as the user leaves it" this is what you are looking for, no need to download an application you can also set a background processes limit (none, 1, 2, 3, 4, all processes) in background
