Tasker Help?

I have setup a Task to Turn on WiFi as needed when called for by an App. Since it takes a couple of seconds for WiFi to find and obtain an IP address is there a way to make my WiFi Task to delay a few seconds so IP can be obtained before the App that called for WiFi is started?

Thanks

Sure. Create a task that will turn your wifi on. Then set a delay task for 2-4 seconds - whatever you want. Then set a tast to start the program that you want.

You can choose a icon for the task. I would recommend the same icon as the program you actually want to run. Then put it on your desktop.

So you have a icon on the desktop that looks like the original program, but actually runs the tasker task (starts wifi, pauses 2-4 seconds, starts actual program). The end user won't tell the difference, but it will work as you want.

Thanks here is what I have so far:

I have Profile Called WiFi Use. In that Profile I have Task to Turn on Wifi when any of 5 apps start then I have an End task that turns off Wifi when I turn off any of those 5 Apps. Do I now somehow edit what I have to set the Delays? Or do I need to create something new and add to the Profile?

Thanks

Sorry. I didn't explain myself very well.

You can use this method if this is a program that you use a lot and want to have a shortcut on the android home page for that program. Instead of using the normal program shortcut, you'll create a tasker profile instead. You can create a shortcut to that tasker profile on the homepage. You can also use the icon of the original program so it looks like the normal shortcut that you would expect.

However, the tasker profile will look something like this:

1) Start Wi-fi
2) Wait 3 seconds
3) Start "XYZ" Program.

It is as simple as that.

I'm sure there is a way to do it your way (where you have one profile that would be called if one of many programs were started). But I'm not sure exactly how now that the kill app function doesn't work. (My first thought would be to write the selected app to a variable, then kill the selected app, start wifi, wait 3 seconds, and then start the app again (name in variable)).

Yeah, except you are adding lag to an otherwise very fast phone whenever you want to use that shortcut.

Out of curiosity, Ron, what app are you using that requires Wifi and why don't you want Wifi to be on anyway?

Completely irrelevant. WiFi takes however long it needs to to connect so there's no way around this given the OP's request.

Battery life concerns. Though I leave WiFi on all the time with insignificant impact on battery life.

No, it's not irrelevant. When I press on the icon on my home screen, I don't want to wait 3 seconds for the app to appear. That is precisely what Sic's profile would do, and it would annoy the living hell out of me.

Also, if during that 3 seconds I change my mind and open another app instead, Tasker will popup the app in front of me and interrupt whatever I was going to do.

No, what I would want (and the OP presumably as well) would be for the app to appear right away AND the Wifi to turn on quick enough that he doesn't get any error message from the app he is trying to open. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to do this because the Wifi simply takes too long to make a connection.

Wifi should use less battery. If the OP is near a Wifi signal, it will save him battery to have Wifi on the entire time he is within range (compared to a 3G connection that is).

This is precisely why I asked the question. I don't know of any perfect way to do what he is asking, and I don't think adding a 3 second lag time is a good solution.

If I had more information about the situation and the app, perhaps there are alternative solutions that would be better.
