Root Technically Challenged

Ok, so you can make fun of me all you want, that won't change anything. The fact is, I'm not really a tech guy, and I'm really new to Android in general. Since I've started on AF and played with my Op V, I've learned quite a bit, so I feel like I understand Roms, Recoveries, etc. What I don't understand is Kernels. I have no idea what a kernel is, or what it's for, and I feel like that's something I should know. So if someone could give me the simplest possible version of what it is that'd be great. If it's something I just don't need to mess with, let me know that too.

Thanks.

the kernel is like the layer beween software and hardware if you flash a S kernle your buttions will be swapped its what govers why battery is good here and bad there

Side note: Is there any reason to change recoveries? I'm using the BobZhome recovery, and haven't had any issues, so is there any reason to flash a newer one?

The best kernel would be the one comes prepackaged with the ROM. The devs will include the kernel with their ROM. As for recoveries, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Kernel's are what runs the phone. If you had no kernel, your phone would be at the LG logo all day.

When your phone is on the bootanimation and everything, that's the kernel being loaded.
