tell us about your battery life

I suppose that's fair enough. I upgraded from a blackberry tour to the photon. The tour sucked in every aspect except for battery life. I suppose I'm still comparing all phones to the tour in terms of battery life, which is probably not fair.

If there's anything that blackberry kills all other smartphones on, it's battery life. It's RIM's technology for email push. It's a different delivery system.

My buddy was diehard blackberry, until he got the iPhone and that's the one thing he noticed right off the bat. He wasn't used to charging every night, which I was because of my Windows Mobile days.

Believe me, if you came from Windows Mobile like me...battery life is like a dream with Android compared to Windows Mobile.

I think that was the only thing I liked about my BB Curve I had. The battery life was very good. Though compared to the Palm Treo I had, the BB wasn't outstanding really. I didn't have quite the same level of BB as you had, so I don't think mine was quite as good with battery life as the Tour.

Considering I ditched the BB after one year (to the day) you can tell I hated it in every other respect. Even my Intercept was a major upgrade for me.

I think the MoPho is definitely a step up from the BB I had. We kept the BB as a play phone for my son and I do not miss it in the least ;)

Figured I'd throw in my experience with battery life. I've had the phone for a little over a week now. I was struggling to get a full day out of it with moderate use until a couple days ago it start dying in less than 12 hours. I did a factory reset and just for giggles decided to see how long it would last before I put any apps on it. I installed BetterBatteryStats for wakelock tracking (it was really high before) and nothing else. I disabled email sync, haven't used any SMS, and disabled BT, GPS and 4G. Currently, I'm at 17 hours off the charger with 80% battery left.

I'm going to slowly add apps and watch how each change affects battery life. I did note that even on a factory reset Photon with just about everything imaginable disabled, there appears to be at least 15% awake time when the screen is off. That definitely shouldn't be the case.

I also noticed a strange issue where the first 10% drops much faster than the rest of the charge. It was dropping 10% in about 8 minutes before. This last time it looks like it took a few hours, but still 2-3 faster than going from 90%-80%.

PS Quick question if anyone knows the answer: is there a way to see sleep or awake time in Gingerbread? I don't mean on the usage graph, I'm trying to find and actual number like 8hrs 42mins. It seems like in Froyo it was under Settings > About Phone > Status, but I only have up time there.

Sycobob did you also try updating your profile and PRL after the reset? I know including myself I got much better battery life after I did that.

Generally speaking I keep my phone on 3G and only use wireless whenever I know it is available. I should keep it on at home more but I'm too lazy to go back and forth. I also keep everything sync'd on my main gmail account (I have 2). When I am just letting it sit around and getting an e-mail or text here or there I lose about 1% an hour.

I do have the night mode set to run from 10pm to 7am since I never do much with the phone at night anyway so that does save a few more percentages a night.

I did try updating the Profile and PRL. I'll see how that pans out. As soon as I posted here though I dropped to 40% in an hour, which is just ridiculous. I installed SMS Unread and opened Text Messaging. It's been dropping like a rock ever since. I don't understand this crap.

What battery app are you using to get your percentages? Reason I ask is majority of the battery percentage indicators show the system's pattern of percentage:

96-100 = 100%
91-95= 95%
86-90= 90%
81-85=85%
71-80=80%
61-70=70%
51-60=60%
41-50=50%
31-40=40%
21-30=30%
16-20=20%
11-15=15%
6-10=10%
1-5=5%

I've only found 3 battery apps that actually show single percentage increments.

The first 10% quick drop is pretty normal. When your battery life was dropping quickly did you check to see if your phone gets warm/hot. When I was streaming netflix sometimes mine gets hot and the battery life went 100% to 5% in less than 2 hours. The battery graph shows a basic free fall.

Are you sure it isn't another app you have running and not the phone?

Idle phone dropping 40% in an hour seems way too much.

If my phone were doing that, I'd factory reset then update the PRL and Profile in about that order. Then add one by one apps back to see if I can figure out the culprit.

I have been trying JD for a few days. And so far im mixed on it. Stock, MoPho is great...im trying to compare week to week. Ill post more info.

Stats 20hrs @ 51% batt left with JD.
I remember getting the same without JD but ill find out next week.

This post made me think you were already adding your apps back and that you had just updated the profile & PRL after the fact. My mistake.

I did 2 factory resets on my phone. Once on the 2nd day after I got it and was having funky stuff going on with the battery. The lady who set it up clicked on some weird settings I think so I wiped it, updated the PRL & Profile and had no issues since. I did it a 2nd time after I got the update OTA. It's standard in my brain to wipe a phone, update it and thenadd things back. Sometimes doing it in a funky order can screw things up. Same was true of my other Android devices.

If you have good reception where your phone is, then I would take it back for an exchange. What you are seeing is not normal IMO.

I think it was the SMS Unread app. As soon as I uninstalled it the problem went away. I'm getting decent life now. The only thing bothering me is the stuff that's keeping it awake more than it should be. Event Log Service (Google Services), AlarmManager (Android System), *backup* (Android System), PollingManager (com.motorola.blur.service.blur.Motorola Services) all seem to be keeping the phone awake as much as 50% of the time. I disabled backing up to the Google servers, so that might take care of part of it.

Keep us posted.

When I get a chance away from my son I'll check out the phone to see what I have running specifically and how much. If I do it now I know I won't be able to do it in peace since my son grabs my phone to play as soon as he can ;) I don't turn everything off on my phone but I don't keep it all running all the time. I have it sleep at night when I do, but otherwise I do keep the e-mail, contacts and all that sync'd.

I reset my MoPho, prl and profile last night. I did not notice improvements in battery life. For me this seems to be an issue of active screen use. While idle, i barely notice battery drain, but while the screen is active, the drain is fast.

I used Pandora for 5 hours straight today and to my surprise the battery barely drained.

My recently retired EVO 3D had better battery life overall , but the MoPho's stability is a welcome trade off.

I love this phone, hopefully upcoming updates will improve battery functions.

Just a minor update, since removing SMS Unread and going through a full charge cycle, I'm currently at 80% after 20 hours of standby and ~20 minutes of call time. I disabled backups which helped my sleep time a bunch.

I can drain this battery down to 28% in 5 hours, no problem on my third Photon. I hope it's just that my use has increased because it's a slow weekend for me and I have time to play with my phone.

In my experience, 3 things cause major battery drain. Using the phone, obviously. This is the easiest to deal with. The other 2 are apps keeping your phone awake, and frequent data access.

Check your battery usage graph, if there's lots of screen on time and it's smooth between periods of screen on time, you're fine, you just used it a bunch. If there's more than minimal awake time when the screen is off or there's sharp drops when you aren't using it then you have issues with apps.

Yesterday I was able to pull the phone off the charger at 7:45am and the phone was still alive at 11pm last night, it was saying I should connect to charger, but I was very happy with that.

15hrs with me using it all day for web and google search was pretty awesome.

I do use the task manager app that came with the phone to shut down most apps if the screen has been off for more than 2 minutes. I also have the phone set to have the battery management set at night mode.

I'd like to know this as well. I can't figure out what that graph means!!

I think I'm getting decent battery life with my new photon but always looking for ways to improve it.

Here are my numbers:
1 d 3H 19 m 4s on battery
phone idle 50% 23h 33m 39s
display 27% 3h 45m 25s
cell standby 10% 1 day 3h 18m 48s, time w/o signal 4%
android OS 3%
wi-fi 3%
voice calls 3%
android system 2%

tried to take screen shot but still trying to work that out! New to all this technology stuff!

Here is something else to try if you use wifi a lot (it's all I use at home...3G not so hot in my building in the Bronx)....set the wifi sleep policy to NEVER. You can find it in the advanced wireless settings......Settings>wireless & networks>wifi settings>menu button>advanced...select never. If not, everytime your phone goes to sleep it will revert to 3G and have to re-ping (or something like that) the wifi connection.

I'm happy with the battery life. I'm coming from a palm pre- overclocked with a huge 2600mAh extended battery so I was prepared to be disappointed with this battery but I must say its been great. Particularly if the phone is idle....it holds the charge.
