.Telus Froyo Update Available

I wouldn't mind picking up a Milestone 2 since it's perfect specs for both Froyo and Gingerbread, but no compatible 3G version.
You could try and find a droid 2 global. Just recently there was one for sale on kijiji in my area. http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_droid_2_global-3636.php

Atrix is really the next logical upgrade, but it's probably going to be a while before I can get my hands on a Bell version...

After this whole debacle with this late update, I'm not going back to moto. HTC or samsung dual core for me after this.

After this whole debacle with this late update, I'm not going back to moto. HTC or samsung dual core for me after this.

The Droid 2 Global was a hot topic in late 2010. I got excited and really into it, but sadly the problem is that the mod for it keeps crapping out. Sometimes it's when you do an update, and other times it happens for no reason. I haven't caught up with the recent fixes lately, but I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one for the time being if the mod can hold up.

As for future Android phones, *sigh* it's a tough call. I've owned a Desire, N1, Bell Vibrant, and Telus Fascinate (Galaxy S siblings)

HTC phones are just plain AWESOME to mod, but sadly they are also the most unreliable phones I've ever used when it comes to dropped calls. (I've also owned a Tilt & Tilt II, my friend has a Fuze)Dropped calls became too much of an issue for work. It's tough enough being on AT&T's network as it is. :p

As for Samsung, I was the victim of the Bell Vibrant Internal Memory Crash twice and the Fascinate was DOA as well. Looking ahead, the Nexus S has no Micro SD which is a deal breaker for me and as bad as Moto is for updates, many would agree that Samsung is actually worse.

The perfect marriage would have been Nokia, but those idiots chose WM7 because their CEO was a former Microsoft Exec. (Everybody is questioning those motives)

Sony, Acer, and Dell don't really have anything that interests me, so I'm stuck with Motorola basically by default.

Yes I'm a phone enthusiast, but I'm also a long time Howardforums member (same name) so I change phones just a little bit faster than the average user... ;)

...great report ccrows.

While the phone isn't laggy generally (Overclock 800 MHz), I do see a definite slowdown right after wakeup. If I haven't used the phone in a bit, and I assume the android OS has slowed the processor down, it takes a couple of seconds for it to wipe the sleep out of its eyes and stretch before doing what I ask. Then, it's fine.

Another little odd thing I've seen is when I press the menu key and try to bring up the notifications, it closes on me. I go through the cycle a couple of times before it stays open. Odd, but no biggie.

I'm thrilled that Easy Root still worked. I believe the dev said in one of his blog posts that it wouldn't work, or he wasn't sure if it would work after the MS went to 2.2 Plus the fact the Milestone Overclock is still cool, is a godsend.

Some of the lag for me is like what you said, when it wakes up (kinda like a cold start on a car) but I'm also getting bad lag on some apps while the phone is running with really nothing else fighting for the memory.

It's kinda reminds me of the launched version of the Samsung Galaxy S. That phone had horrible lag, and lag fixes were popping up everywhere. Most of them were basically grabbing extra cache from a partition dedicated for that on the internal SD. Unfortunately the Internal SD on the Milestone is too small to do the same.

However I still may be interested in "possibly" throwing Gingerbread on this. People must think I'm nuts because "another update and extra bloat that the phone already can't handle" BUT there have been some reported success with it over on XDA and there's a lot of tweaks that help speed things up.

I really don't want to go down that route, but this lag might motivate me to look into it a little bit more...

* Edit BTW This is the thread that I was talking about -[ROM] (AOSP GINGERBREAD) ShadowMOD-BR v2.3.2b6 [2010-02-11] - xda-developers

It's custom ROM territory, so anyone brave enough to try do so at your own risk!...

...I admit, I want to go down that road as well. For now, though, the phone continues to hold my attention enough. ;)

Just before the news that the update was coming "next week", I tried to start the process. I was trying to get Open Recovery on my phone, and failing miserably. Even though the vulnerable recovery "passed" when I flashed it, the open recovery wouldn't take (usual signature errors). I'm pretty sure its just because the vulnerable recovery was being re-written when the phone re-booted the final time. I just can't figure out how to get passed that. Anyway...sorry...wrong forum, I know:p

I think I may have just bricked my phone. I ran the Motorola software updater, but when it asks to disconnect, reboot, and reconnect your phone, my phone never got into the OS, it is still hanging on the android logo. I took out the battery and tried to start it again but it still hangs. The android logo flashes (disappears briefly) every once in a while. I can get into the bootloader, but not OpenRecovery, I guess that got reflashed. The Motorola software update program said that the update completed successfully, but now will not recognize my phone because I can't get into an OS....

EDIT: RSD Lite still sees my phone. Phew! I'd like to load the official ROM though.

I am starting to get annoyed with the hang up of the home screen rebuilding and sometimes sluggishness after using some apps or when I "home" out of the stock browser (which I feel is way faster now and had me switch back from Dolphin hd). So after searching around, I found this little tidbit, A Milestone Breakthrough! | Life, the Universe and Engineering…, that did help somewhat, but not as much as I hoped. It is a factory reset/wipe cache that is supposed to get rid of all info off your phone (moreso than just the factory reset from the phones privacy menu) so 2.2 will have no old info from 2.1 will slow it down. Just make sure to back up everything you to save with something like Titanium backup (you need root, which is ridiculously easy with Universal Androot or Easy Root) before you try this.

After you do this, just go to the market and reinstall your backup app and start restoring.

^ If you never used Froyo before, and you were a fan of "Advanced Task Killer" then Froyo will be a shock to your system. You are going to have to learn to give up control and trust Android to handle business when you are finished with a program.

...

If you are a fan of Advanced Task Killer and like to have more control of what Android can and cannot do then stay on Eclair.

I'm confused - what's the issue with Advanced Task Killer on Froyo?

I used it before w Eclaire and am using it now with Froyo too... I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary I dont think...

Can someone clue me in?

*UGH* I hate the blank homescreen too!

Unfortunately it's all a memory issue. There really is only one fix:
I have a fix for the blank home screen. Download launcher pro (free or premium), hit your menu button, go into preferences, go into general settings and "check" keep in memory. It says it may cause instability but it has been good to me so far.

Next, go back one and then into advanced settings, then into memory usage settings. "Check" use homescreen caches and build caches as needed. Make sure clear caches on exit is unchecked as I believe this was the major cause of the issue with the stock browser and stock launcher pro settings as it would clear its usage when you went into an app and then had to rebuild the homescreens when you left an app. I also have my memory usage preset on high and homescreen cache type on normal.

With these settings I go straight to a full set of homescreens when closing any app and the browser so far.

Hope this helps.

^ LMAO! I was just going to post this verbatim. The lag has driven me nuts.

I've spent the past couple of days tweaking the **** out of this thing because the problem has become worse. Motorola should have had a better disclaimer about Froyo. Then the Atrix with a dual processor has the SAME ISSUES on Froyo. Seriously Motorola "What gives"?

So Launcher Pro definitely fixes the lag but it seems to be draining the battery faster when overclocked at 1000MHz or above. I'm also trying other launchers.

Here's a good review of other alternatives:

Android Home Screen Launchers: Six of the Best | Android.AppStorm

Right now I'm flip-flopping between "Launcher Pro" and "Go Launcher EX" because Go Launcher EX also has a built in task manager built in the task drawer which is picking up more apps than Moto's Froyo Stock Task Manager. (For example if you have Pandora installed you will see how many times it keeps popping back up after you kill it using GO Launcher's Task Manager)

Another fun (and free) not covered in the above link is "HeLauncher". This Launcher gives you desktop skins like HTC Sense, Moto Blur, Stock Gingerbread, and many more. This is more looks than functionality, but HTC Sense skin on a Moto is still interesting... :)

Purposely putting this into a separate post:

So with all that I said in the previous post, this is my current config:

Milestone running Froyo and Rooted

Currently using both "Launcher Pro" and "Go Launcher EX" to see what gives the better battery life.

^ (ADW Launcher just feels to buggy on this phone yet it gives more options)

Finally I'm using Milestone Overclock (Need Root) at 800 MHz since 1000MHz and above just kills the battery and the phone gets too hot IMO with either launcher.

Bottom Line - You definitely will need a "Launcher". 800MHz IMO seems to be the sweet spot for battery and heat issues with any launcher on this phone... :)

What vsel setting are you using with 1000mhz? I am using 60 and it is stable and never gets too hot with the battery lasting a decent amount.

I have been trying to update to Froyo on my Milestone for a few days now. I have tried this using two different computers and I always get the same error. I suspect therefore, that it has something to do with the phone itself. I keep getting a "Failed to uninstall previous Motorola software update" error. Does anyone out there have any idea as to what might be going on? The current OS is 2.1 update 1 and the phone is not rooted but it is unlocked.
