Telus Milestone going to the States.

I did a search but couldn't find anything..:(

I'm going to be going to the States for the first time with my Canadian Milestone. Vegas specifically:D (first time).

Is there anything I need to do make sure I don't incur a huge amount of roaming?? I doubt I'll get any calls, one maybe, but I'd like to use the GPS and apps like Yelp or Places. Will the apps work on the US network? Email? Will there be roaming for data? If so what kind of charge should I expect?

Had a BB on my last trip to Cali, got/sent some emails, texted, etc. and it wasn't too bad...

Thanks :)

Making calls will get you long distance and roaming charges. Using any data (emails, text, gps, yelp, places) will get you data roaming charges. Unless you turn off roaming data and just use wifi (hotspots, free wifi at hotels, etc). Turn off roaming data at Settings -> Wireless & network -> mobile networks -> uncheck Data Roaming.
I've heard horror stories of huge bills from data roaming. Whether the stories are true or not is another thing. I went to Mexico and used the free wifi in the hotel lobby, never made any calls and wasn't charged anything from Telus.

Thanks for the tip ;)

I don't mind the roaming charges if they're not obscene. If you have to pay for a service, you gotta pay for a service...

Anyone data roamed to the States on Telus? What were the charges for your usage?

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]I wrote to Telus when I was going to Mexico and got this response. You could email them to ask specifically about where you are going.
Thank you for taking the time to write to TELUS via e-mail. We attempt to respond to questions as quickly as possible and I do regret the delay in replying to your e-mail today.

Airtime in Mexico is billed at $3 per minute, text messages are billed at $0.60 per messages sent or received, and data is charged at $25 per MB.

Please refer to the link below for our rates for international roaming:

TELUS also offers packages for international roaming. Please refer to the link below for more information:

You may connect to a local Wi-Fi connection and not incur any additional data charges.

Please be advised that some places may require you to pay in advance before you can connect to their Wi-Fi connection.

Certain places such as an airport, coffee shops, hotels may offer free Wi-Fi services. Please inquire before hand if you are unsure.

yup that right $25.00 per Mb, I was in spokane a few months ago and i needed a address, and nowhere near a wi-fi connection, it cost me $30.00 to just go onto the web page for the company and get the address from it. dont data roam from telus in the US unless you absolutely have to.

OUCH!:(

In the second link that Fubar posted from Telus, and I called them today about it, you can pay $10 bucks for a 30 day US Data-Roaming "package". One time fee of $10 and then it's a dollar per MB.

I doubt I'd use more than 5MB in a 3 day period. Still a bit pricey, but the little bit of insurance beats the alternative.

Well I got back in one piece:D

I only used 3MB while I was away (so says 3G Watchdog). I'll have to wait and see what the bill will look like.

Never got a call, only got one text. Yay me.

I was able to get email either with the AT&T network or with WiFi.
BUT! None of the GPS functions functioned at all. No latitude, maps, places... You name it. Also, AccuWeather wouldn't update via WiFi:confused: I had to be on the cell network for it to update.

I'm pretty disappointed how the "smart" in the smartphone worked when not on my home network..

Is this the phones fault? Network? The apps themselves??
