Root Tether via WIFI on unlimited data plans

I am having the exact same issue. I've tried every combination of settings and same results. I tried clearing data from app then removing app and re-installing.

I can get internet for about 60 seconds then it quits working. I can't get encryption to ever connect. My tablet and PC will say connecting but never connect.

I am running Stock ICS and rooted.

Anyone have suggestions??

Took the plunge into CM10 and wifi tether works perfectly! :)
Wow what a great rom!

you can even add a toggle for it in the notification window and then wifi tether is just one little click away :]

I use wifi tether so much I have the toggle as my first one :p

Thats one thing I like about cm10 more than aokp41. Aokp41 doesnt have the wifi tether toggle.

This may be a dumb question, but throughout this thread as people are discussing the built in wifi tether in tdm's rom, are they referring to the wifi direct app? I have tried to use that app as a hotspot for my laptop and tablet and could not get it to actually work. I also downloaded wifi tether and I kept getting an error after I would choose to tether. Is there a different built in tether app or method that I'm not seeing in his rom. Or maybe I am forgetting to check a certain setting or something. Thanks for the help !

No it's not that app.

its under settings/wireless and networks/more/tethering and portable Wi-Fi/then enable portable Wi-Fi. First go to setup portable Wi-Fi and set a name and password or make it open. I keep mine open.

If you are on cm10 then you can make a toggle for it. Go to settings/system/notification drawer/widget buttons/scroll down to toggle Wi-Fi AP and then your Wi-Fi tether is one click away

I have downloaded the linked WiFi tether and when I start it, I am not getting any error message sin the logs. It all seems to be fine, but the SSID does not broadcast and I cannot connect to it.

Could someone post a link to the download for TDM's CM10 ROM because I am having a heck of a time finding it.

There's a special modification (has TrevE in the name) that has to be side-loaded. See some previous posts with this link to download it:

The version from the Play Store does not work.

It doesn't have to be side loaded. As i understand it... tethering is actually built into the android os. Different ROMs may enable it differently and most stock rooms just block the option to turn it on. However its part of Google's source for it to be in Android.

Of course i could be wrong. But that's the way i understand it.

FoxFi works by turning on the builtin hotspot. However, that stopped working on the Spectrum after the ICS update, so this is an alternative that only works on rooted phones & needs to be sideloaded since it's not in the Play Store.

All this is only an issue if you are still on an unlimited data plan. If you are on a limited data plan, you can use the builtin hotspot for no extra cost.

Sorry if this was answered somewhere else. I haven't been able to find any solutions so far.

Is there a way to connect more than one device to the built in wifi tether? I can connect one computer just fine, but that's it. Trying to connect a 2nd one won't work.

Nevermind. Ignore that question. It was just a computer issue.

I have always been able to connect at least two devices since Quattrimus 4.1.2 (both cm and AOKP) currently running AOKP42 official build 6 on Quattrimus kernel and have Two PCs and a tablet connected to my Phone's hotspot.

Just got an update notification for 3.3-beta2 on the Play Store. It works fine with an open SSID but still fails with encryption enabled.

Incidentally, this update also fixes an issue I used to see with the TrevE mod that caused graphics to flicker badly until the phone is rebooted. EDIT: Still has the problem but not as bad. Needs a reboot after turning off the hotspot to reset graphics.
