The hwcomposer error is from the HAL module that deals with screen rendering. Specifically what is used to render for 2D (hardware or OpenGL). Have you made any changes under developer options for screen rendering? I've been digging thru the framework jars and there is a whole section that belongs to tethering. I'm having issues getting it to anything other then .smali , so reading thru it is a pain and I'm not even sure if that is what is causing the issue.

Ok, I finally got this working once I realized that I could ignore the mms clamping error. I can not for the life of me get access control to actually block connections or have wifi tether announce when people connect, so this has limited use for me. I still love being able to tether, I just have to make sure it's not in a crowed area where someone else could jack my connection.

I would honestly grab the one apk and try running it. Like I mentioned in my post, I got an error about MMS clamping, but it did not affect my ability to use tether.
Try rebooting your phone then give it a shot again.
It works again when I reboot, only once tho. It acts like its working the second time, but there is no network to connect to, broadcasted or hidden. No big deal - reboot is fine for now.
Edit:even better, turning off wifi on the phone fixes it also - no need for a reboot.

Finally got it working
same here... until i scrolled down this far... but it works like a charm.. now internet is faster.... seems like 4g tethered speeds are faster than my roadrunner
I use LG Spectrum (vs920) rooted and Custom ROM Icy Fusion v3.6 (Android 4.0.4) I choose profile generic ICS and method Hostapd. Then enabled Wifi Encryption. My tablet connected it very well for short time about 2 minutes then lost connection. Reconnection was unsucessful. Removed Wifi encryption and works again but only about 60 second and nothing transmit on tablet again. I checked wifi on PC and I see that phone itself enabled wifi encryption during tethering. This a glitch? Turned off tether and on. Then can transmit again for about 60 seconds then stopped. I had to reenable tether every time and a glitch each 60 second.

TDM's CM10 Rom has a built in tether feature which works brilliantly.
I tried build-in wifi hotspot in Quattrimus JB CM10 and 4G would not work. 4G turned off instantly after connect with wifi tablet. Does not help. I installed Wifi tether on spectrum and works good without turning off 4G itself.

My wife's phone had the same problem when initially going to cm10. I rebooted it and put it on open and its worked ever since. Also on unlimited data plan.
The only concern I have is that the WiFi tether app went much faster in GB than in the native tethering of cm10. Anyone else notice their speeds are slower vs the trevE mod wifi tether app in GB or stock based ICS?

actually it's the opposite for me. It seems faster to me

Are you on cm10 or aokp using that app? It wouldn't work whenever I would try it.
I am having the exact same issue. I've tried every combination of settings and same results. I tried clearing data from app then removing app and re-installing.
I can get internet for about 60 seconds then it quits working. I can't get encryption to ever connect. My tablet and PC will say connecting but never connect.
I am running Stock ICS and rooted.
Anyone have suggestions??
