Help Tethering manager force close

Is there any way to backup your data/apps without rooting your phone(to use Mybackup/Titanium backup) via usb to computer?

Such a pain, had to go look for a new root method for 2.3.5, backed everything up, reset back to factory settings, reroot, redownload Mybackup then restored everything. Now I have to reconfigure some widgets. Oh well, time for a new layout.

I had the same problem. I changed setting on phone to Kies (firmware update) Menu>settings>applications>usb settings>kies. Start Kies on computer and plug in phone to usb. Since there was no updates, just hit the home button on phone and disconnect from computer. It worked on mine.:)

After restarting my phone a few times, the problem returned. Toggled on and off the Mobile AP and the force close error stopped again while toggling between wifi and 3g. Clearly not a permanent fix...

My wife and I both have Samsung Captivates. After we updated to 2.3.5 using Samsung Kies mini we started seeing tethering manager forced close messages when we charge the phone either through a power outlet or an usb port. I saw the suggestion of resetting the phone to factory settings as a fix but I did not want to go through the trouble, as least not yet.
I was concerned that with this tethering issue, I would not be able to connect to the PC. So I reconnected to Samsung Kies mini on my laptop using the usb cable. Samsung Kies mini went through the motion of checking for updates and reported that there was no update. I then exited my Kies mini connection on my phone using the HOME key. After this exercise, my phone no long exhibit the tethering manager forced close issue when the usb cable is plugged in for charging. I went through the same process with my wife's phone, and now it is fine also. I shall give it a few days to see if the problem returns.
In trying to rationalize why this is working for me, the only thing I can think of is that when I updated the firmware, instead of existing Kies mini from the phone using the HOME key, I used the 'back' key instead. The instruction on the phone clearly says HOME key.

:) Finally followed this last night and haven't had a problem yet! No pop up! And such an easy fix too! Thanks for sharing!!! I'll have to tell my son too :-)

I've been getting this "force close" for tethering since I upgraded to 2.3.5 each time I plug in or unplug the USB cable for charging purposes, even if there's no computer at the other end of the cable. Annoying. So far, the procedure described in agawk's post seems to be working. Really annoying, since I have never used the phone for tethering, and never will, since I don't want to pay AT&T any more money each month.

I'm seeing the same thing GBart45 saw. I tried agawk's method of eliminating the error, but when I tested the fix further by turning the phone off and back on, the error came back. Besides resetting, which seems to have it's own set of problems, is there a new fix that's out there?

I'm also getting the error. In the process of trying to figure out how to "fix" it, I observed that Hotspot tethering actually works on the phone after the error occurs, even though I've never enabled the feature with AT&T. So it appears that there is actually a benefit to this bug!

I have not tried any of these "fixes" yet. They all seem to be temporary and/or a lot of work. I notice mine is when I connect or unconnect my charger but I rarely connect to my pc. Sometimes when it force closes, my phone also freezes up & I have to do a hard reset. My hubby has the same phone as mine & he doesn't have any problems. I'm seriously considering switching to iPhone ... lol.

So my husband did this: Settings, Wireless Networks, mobile Networks, Access Point Names, and found one called Broadband. If you find this name, just hit the Menu button (lower left) and then Reset To Default. You may need to check the AT&T WAP button if it's not already selected when you're done. This fixed mine for now...even after a reboot. I'll post later if it returns!

I found that the fix by Heyu611 took care of my problem. Just follow the instructions. Turned my phone on and off a couple of times to verify. When I went into Settings, Wireless Networks, mobile Networks, Access Point Names later, the AT&T WAP button was selected. Thanks Heyu611.

I have tried several of the suggestions here to make the Tethering Manager messages go away, the one that made the messages go away for me was the short reset. I don't see them any longer, but the worst part remains ever since I upgraded to 2.3.5, and that is that I can not connect the phone to any PC, whether it is XP, 7, or even Linux all were working just fine prior to update. The USB port is set to prompt when connected and I never get the prompt. Even when I set the USB to mass storage directly, it will not connect. It was working fine when I used Kies Mini to update obviously, but it has never been able to connect since then.

Help!

Thank you Heyu611. This worked great for my phone and my wife's phone. Nice easy fix. No factory resets. Please tell your husband thanks for us!

My captivate has been Teether Force closing every time I plugged or unplugged to charger. It would FC 2 times every time before working normally.
Thanks Heyu611 Your husband found such an easy solution. Wonderful !

I think I might have found another way to fix this "force close" error when the phone switches from 3G to WiFi and vice versa, or when you disconnect from a computer via USB.

for the Captivate with 2.3.5 installed:

1. Put your phone's USB setting to Mass Storage:
Settings>Applications>USB settings>Mass storage.
(this way when you connect your phone to your computer via USB cable, it won't be in Kies, or Media Player mode).

2. Connect the phone to your computer via USB, but don't click the button "Connect storage to PC"

3. Hit the "Home" button on your phone and go to:
Settings> Wireless and network > Teathering and portable hotspot >

and you want to un-check "USB tethering"

disconnect, and you will not see the error message when switching from 3G to WiFi and vice versa, nor will you get the error message when plugging in your phone to the USB. NO FACTORY RESET REQUIRED.

As far as free tethering... well that is a separate issue, and I'm sure you can find out about that with a little searching on Google.

I did that, except I had to check "USB tethering" first in order to un-check it. That worked for a while, but then the bug returned a few days later. I went through the process again and for now it is good again.

Is there a permanent solution to this? A way to un-install the tethering manager, which I will never use? Are the Android developers aware of this? Any word on whether it will be fixed, and if so when?

UPDATE: I just noticed the workaround posted by HeyU611. I went through that process too. We'll see what happens.

Since I figure GB would be the last update, and there is a method to root GB now (see: http://androidforums.com/captivate-...t-official-2-3-5-kernel-swap.html#post3812463). I rooted, installed Busybox, Superuser, and Titanium BU. Then uninstalled Tethering manager (along with the rest of the ATT bloatware). No more force closed and everything works as it should and I did not have to factory reset.
That's the best answer since I don't tether. It's a lot easier than doing the reset/ restore everything method (since I just rooted and restored everything this morning!).

This method worked for me. Previously, when activating/deactivating wifi or plugging in/out it would prompt for about two force close responses. Concisely,
1. open kies mini on the computer.
2. plugin the phone and select Firmware Update (kies update) [this is assuming you have your phone set to "Ask me" in the usb settings]
3. Kies may say your phone is up to date, doesn't matter
4. On your phone, press the "Home" button. Now unplug your phone or close kies. Doesn't matter
5. Rinse and repeat.
