Tethering / Personal Hotspot

I am 95% certain to be getting a tablet in the near future, although I may wait for Android Honeycomb 3.2 to be reviewed on my candidates.

The majority of the time I will be using the Tablet at home or maybe the office, where I have WiFi so don't want GPRS capabilities and the associated cost. However once in a blue moon I will want to use it out and about, so would like to be able to use the GPRS capabilities of a phone via Bluetooth or WiFi tethering / personal hot spot.

I don't need a flashy all singing and dancing phone, but something more than a candybar to make and receive calls, pick up an occasional email, check a web page and if possible GPS maps for finding directions, not full sat nav.

A bonus would be a 1/2 decent MP3 player, but not a requirement.

I love the look and feel of the GALAXY S II but having a hard time justifying the expense to myself. Spending that amount of money would put back the Tablet purchase, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Any recommendations on an alternative device would be greatly appreciated.

I would stop by your nearest VZW/ATT/etc store or third-party vendor and see what phones they have on special. You can probably get last year's model phones for a pretty good deal, like a Droid Incredible, Droid X, or the Galaxy S (original, not II).
