Help Tethering Problem

Hi
I have tethered my galaxy s2 to my laptop many times without any problems in the past . However when trying today I noticed that the settings had changed. If I change the SSID and password to my own choice they keep reverting to default. I have tried using default settings to connect but it still does not work. I recently updated the firmware si I think was the start of the problem. I am on the Orange UK network and have Android version 2.3.5

I'm thinking that it is possible that the firmware update "updated" the device's tethering to exclude it from connecting without a data plan. The Orange data scheme changed a bit last September.
