Tethering question

I recently rooted my phone to 2.1 and I was wondering if I could get charged for tethering even though I have the unlimited data plan?

I know that this has been discussed before but I can't get a real answer. I've been searching on google for a few days now and one person says yes and another person says no. I just want a straight answer.

The answer is no. The unlimited data plan allows you to use unlimited data.. even took me a minute to realize what I typed..
 
ive only used the free app "pda net" you can go to any sites until the trial period is up, then u cant go to https sites. like banking stuff, paypal, etc. pda net is great tho, its as fast as cable internet i'd say. it makes the phone get extremely hot but o well. ive also heard " easy tether" is good too.
 
since you are rooted you can use this wifi tethering app
tw.mawa.jasoncheng.aNetShare.apk
just install it like you would any other app when you run it its going to ask you for su permission just click on always allow and then it will tell you if you want to install the tether package press yes or install , can't remember the exact words and after all that is done you should be able to click on start wifi at the bottom. Congratz your are now wifi tethering!

Yeah but I wanted to use 3G tethering, not wifi.. Wifi kind of kills the point. Unless you mean wifi as in 3G. But yeah, I downloaded PDAnet.. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be getting any "Unexpected" charges.

hahaha..sorry i had to laugh a little
Thats what that app does
It uses your 3g and makes your phone a hot spot so other things like laptops can use it. It makes your phone into a Wifi hot spot that way your psp, laptop, and other devices can connect to it.

No, wifi tethering means your laptop will connect to your phone via wifi, and then your phone connects to the internet via 3G...that way, no cables between your laptop and phone.

The fee for the tethering apps is a one-time fee. At least the one for PDANet and Easy Tether.

You can get Easy Tether Lite or PDANet Lite for free, you just won't be able to log in to sites. Like email, forums, etc.

But if you are doing that to just browse a news site, then you should be fine. I dunno about gaming, but I think that one might be ok as well.

Well I was basically just going to use it for my schooling, twitter, a few forums and maybe youtube (Not all the time though). If I know I'm not going to get charged extra then I'll probably buy PDANet.

Which one is better? PDAnet or Easy Tether?
 
I haven't re-installed it since 2.1, but Proxoid worked well with Ubuntu Linux. And this instructional seems to imply you don't need a tethering app if you're running Linux.


(I've been using PDAnet with Vista, works well, I wouldn't compare it to cable speeds, but it's fast enough--- Personally, I haven;t made a habit out of it because of what the carrier might do, so I don't know what the what is on that--- Does anyone use a tether full-time?)

I have the Wifi thethering app that is included in this All-in-one package for rooting. It works GREAT and is very simple.

But i believe if you are alreday rooted you can download the file to your computer and simply go through the steps to install the extras.

BTW, if you're going to try this, i recommend step 4... remove HTC lockscreen.
The lock screen that replaces it is MUCH better.
 
I just recently started using PDAnet and was surprised at how fast it is. I'm impressed. I wish I had started using it sooner.
 
I recently downloaded PDAnet as well and just wanted to add that it is fantastic. Speed are greater than I anticipated and I have not encountered any difficulties.

I'm a non-root user tethering to a mac computer.
