Tethering to a tablet?

What are the options for tethering an android tablet via an android phone (droid x). I have easytether on my fun, which works great for a my laptop, but if I understand correctly it will not work for tethering to another android device. Is this correct? I'm thinking about getting an android tablet but don't want to pay for a 3G plan. However, there will be times when I want internet access but a wifi network is not available. Any suggestions?

If the tether you use ( wireless tether on my Droid1) only runs as an Adhoc tether vs. Infrastructure AP/Hotspot then you have to got through extra steps... Depending on the device you want to tether it can be very easy (as my Gtab) as replacing the wpa_supplicant executable from;

Android Ad-hoc support hack/wpa_supplicant - xda-developers

or if that doesn't work then can be a bit more complicated as I explain in my thread for ZT-180 on Slatedroid;

Adhoc hotspot connection working DHCP/No static IPADDR required/edit files Once!

I'd say try first way using one of the 2 versions of supplicant that are in that thread (5.x.x or 6.x.x) first as much easier initially and down the line as makes adhoc show up like infrastructure just with a '*' in name...

I tether my tablet through my evo often. No issues.
Give us some details please....

Main question: what software to use with tablet Android OS to Android Phone to tether.

The Evo phone is android phone, OK, which software did you load onto your tablet, which is android.

And what settings did you change on the Tablet, and to what setting.
My tablet is a generic Shenzing "Wonder" It works fine, and even has a 3G icon which must mean something. also I have the bus adapter for 2 usb ports. And I have a micro SD slot. And I have Wi-Fi connection to the internet from my wireless router at home......but i need to travel away from Wi-Fi.

My android Phone is the Samsung Galaxy S, using At&t as carrier.

hmm i would like to know this too
i have a chinese tablet and an htc wildfire phone which has tethering on it and it does work with my laptop but has to be done by usb cable. i have tried doing it with the tablet but nothing happens

Are you still having to pay a tethering fee? I know with Verizon, they charge like an extra $30 a month for the service, even though it is already on my phone should I ever choose to do it.

Standard "wifi tether" (for root users). It runs in infrastructure mode, so nothing to do on the tab side. It is like any other access point.

I rooted my phone today with z4root and downloaded wireless tether from the market. I know just enough about this stuff to do something stupid. I have no ideawhat is meant by ad-hoc, infrastructure, etc... Will a rooted phone and wireless tether do the trick?

It depends on the type of phone you have... for example my Moto Droid 1 can only do Adhoc tether... which the same Wireless Tether app on the DroidX can do Infrastructure which is completely painless as makes phone look like an Infrastructure AP just like your home wireless router... With Adhoc you have to jump through more and different hoops to connect depending on the device you are wanting to tether to your Adhoc tether phone...
