Root Tethering with 2GB data plan?

I'm rooted and enabled sideloading with GladEnable, and when it asked me if I wanted to enable tethering I hit yes to install the files. So how do I actually tether at this point? When I go to turn on wireless hotspot it still says account not valid for it and I don't see any other apps in my list. Did it just not work? And no I haven't updated to gingerbread.

Since you are rooted, it's very easy. You will need to download (possibly buy) SQLite editor, but other than that it's a couple minute fix.

Here's a thread that explains how to do it in the first post:

hmmm I just spent 3 bucks on sqlite and "entitlement check" isn't even in the directory that they said it was in lol damnit. I even tried to filter for it since they said it could be anywhere.

I found the entry at the following location: line 5034 field "entitlement_check"

Changed it from 1 to disabled and now tethering works.

Yeah the option just isn't there for me which makes zero sense. I follow the correct path and when I do a filter for "check" all that pops up is

sms_outgoing_check_interval_ms @ line 34
sms_outgoing_check_max_count @ line 35

it's a little irritating since no one else had the problem in the xda thread. I'm still using froyo as well.

Look at it this way, if your carrier discovers that you're using tethering and it's not part of your contract, they *will* send you a bill for the difference and increase your monthly charges. So the 3 bucks is actually money well spent - you acquired a useful tool for your system, and you learned something.

I updated to gingerbread today and it showed up after I re-rooted. But you're saying AT&T will know that I'm tethering to my xoom and charge me an bunch of money? Will they only find out if I do it a lot or is it obvious to them if I just occasionally do it? I really only use 500-800mb of the 2gb so I just have so much data left...I figured they wouldn't care since generally things that are against AT&T policy are not allowed to be talked about on these boards, and I feel like I see this topic rather frequently.

I'm not in to tethering, so I really can't answer your question about how will AT&T find out - never tried it myself. I have read though, that all of the carriers are cracking down on people who use software for tethering, but don't have a tethering agreement signed. They want their money.

As to asking questions about tethering on the forum, you need to direct that question to one of the Moderators. I'm not a mod, either - just a member like you. :)

HTH,

You are in the wrong DB. I made the same mistake at first. There are three with almost the same name. You need to go into com.motorola.android.provider.settings. My bet is that you chose "com.motorola.android.provider" by mistake, rather than the correct one just below it.

As to the provider finding out. Yes, the discussion is that they 'can' tell, but I haven't heard of anyone getting a bill from ATT, certainly not for occasional use. Now, if you hook a PC up to the phone and use it as your primary Internet and use 2GB every month, with almost all of it from the tethered device, I suppose it's possible.
