Tethering with usb cable

I am trying to tether with my android cell phone, my phone says it is tethering but I can not connect to the internet with my desktop, do I have to change setting in my desktop before I can tether, please help.

Phone is a TMobile, Lg Optimus 9 and i am trying to tether with Emachine desktop, it is windows 7, I will have to get model number later this evening
