Help Tethering

Yes it is possible. It works great with the WiFi Hotspot through Verizon and you can also use PDANet with the correct USB cable.

I just downloaded PdaNet Tablet beta for a stock Droid1 and Nook color, running Phiremod 6.3; and it works using Bluetooth, not a USB cable. You have to download the same app on both your phone and tablet, running the phone as server and tablet as client.

The speed is nothing to write home about, and due to this being Beta 1, it is limited to browsing, gmail, and map. But it works!

June Fabrics says they are working on Beta 2 which is intended to use a different proxy method to allow more apps to access the network port.

I am debating which e-reader/tablet to get and this working is a "major" concern. I currently use PDANet on the laptop and am happy with it, just want to be certain about the Nook. I have not "seen" the USB connection on the Nook. Are we positive this works without rooting?

Where in Florida are you Myk? If you're close to Jax we could meet up and try this out on my Nook Color. The NC is rooted, but on the stock ROM.

Offhand, I would guess that PDANet would NOT work unless you root the Nook Color. My reasoning for saying this is that you probably can't install PDANet on the NC unless it's in the Barnes & Noble Nook app store.

I am right down the road in St. Aug...... We may just have to meet up and try this.

Good Point about loading PDANet w/o rooting. I am the total noob about rooting. I used to hack my Moto phones to free them from Verizon bondage, but the Android platform is new to me, thus I'm hesitant to root.
I am up for a new phone next month, so I was gonna root the eris once I have a new phone, that way if I brick it it is no bid deal....

I spend a good deal of time in St Aug, I'm there at least once a week, sometimes more - so meeting won't be a problem if you want to. My wife is taking the NC with her to work all this week, so it won't be available - any time after that is fine.

I had an Eris, rooting it with the 1-click method is quick and painless.

Can someone fill me in on this PDAnet on laptop idea?

I have a 'droid phone (not rooted) and a linux laptop. I'd like to use the
phone "hotspot" but my mobile vendor wants cash. I don't need this often
and I don't need much data when I use it. However, when I need it, I really need it.

Do I load PDAnet to the phone and then access that from my laptop networking? Does it require a USB or Bluetooth connection?

When the Nook Color is involved, is PDAnet running on both the N/C and phone over B/T? Is there a special USB cable to connect phones and N/C since the Nook has the funky micro connector?

Eagerly curious,

Two separate issues/answers....
PDAnet loaded on droid phone, and loaded on laptop (only have exp. doing this on Win based laptop). In my case, phone connected to pc via usb data cable. This will allow the laptop to use the 3G data stream from the phone provider as a modem. Yes they want you to pay for a separate data plan, yes the contract says not to do it. If you don't do this all the time, and don't go over your data allowance they will probably never notice.

Nook color, short answer will not work without rooting/side loading full android operating system. You can boot NC off of the microSD card with CM7 version of android. Then you have access to bluetooth. Booting (not really rooting) from SD should not void warranty (your mileage may vary), and will allow near full functionality. I have run CM7 on my NC and while the build I had was workable, it was somewhat problematic so I never progressed to PDAnet and tethering. I have not spent much time finding a more stable build and experimenting further. Maybe someone here has and has it working.

Hope this is of some help.

I'm running the N2A edition of boot-from-uSD on my Nook Color. It gives me all of the benefits of a rooted android without "permanent" alteration of the device or its firmware. If there is a performance hit, I have not noticed. I would like to connect the N/C to my 'droid phone for access to the internet. My phone is NOT rooted and I cannot use its built-in hotspot feature. I am hoping that:
1. I can put PDAnet onto the phone and the N/C and be able to share
net access
2. With PDAnet on the phone, I could do something on my linux laptop to share net access as well.

I'm not a gamer and don't use my phone or N/C to watch movies or TV -- just a little YouTube or similar.

Is there any hope for me?
