can a new sound that has been downloaded be used for text alerts. Or is it limited to the ones that come on the phone?

I can't seem to get any options other then the default sounds on the phone

You need to create an audio folder then within there, ringtones, alerts, alarms. What ever you put in these folders should automatically populate the choices in the appropriate.menu
