I have the HTC desire. is there any way to use a different text alert (downloaded sound) other then the ones that come on the phone

Welcome to the Forums!!!
Yes there is. If you create a folder on your SD card and name it MEDIA / audio / Notifications. Place the notification audio clips in this folder and the phone will find em.
Also if you create another folder under /Audio and name it Ringtones, you can add ringtones as well.
