Are they just not there at all or you cannot display them in the gallery? I do know if you're using Google voice for texting you cannot send or receive pictures.

Have you tried rebooting your phone and then trying it? I sometimes have this problem and a reboot seems to fix it.

Is this Wifi or using Data only? Try turning off Wifi first and then turning on Data and then try the d/l.
As weird as this sounds, sometimes installing the Verizon Messages app fixes these problems. I think that once the issue clears up (if it clears up using this app) you can then uninstall it and things remain fine.

One obvious thing to check, though, is settings->Battery & Data Manager->Data delivery and make sure that Data Enabled is checked. MMS messages are delivered using the data network (3G or LTE) and I believe cannot be delivered if you have data disabled. (If you have data enabled but are using WiFi that's ok, as the phone will use LTE or CDMA to deliver the message and the media.)
