Help Text message notification gone

My boyfriend just recently upgraded his dinc to froyo, since then his device stopped notifying him of new text messages when he leaves the sms app open. Any advice?

I believe this is a common problem. I have not tested it myself because I don't leave the message app open much, but my sister complains about it all the time. She downloaded a notifications app that basically allows you to set your phone to vibrate for all sorts of notification purposes...
