Help text message notification sound?

I have been searching for this for about 30 minutes now and none answer this question...

When I am in the stock messenger (the only one I have) if i receive a message from my girlfriend it will not play a sound. it only plays when the screen is off, or I am not in the message. is there a way to get it to always play a sound? she is having the same problem.
It gets annoying because sometimes I leave the phone and messenger open since we talk so frequently.

(I do have the play sound notifications on in the messanger<settings menu)

forget it, i downloaded chomp so it works fine... now i'm just trying to figure out what the 3 yellow dots mean after i send a message

Same problem here. If anyone finds a solution, without downloading additional text messaging apps like chomp or handcent, i'd really appreciate if you share them with us.

P.S. I really like the stock messaging system and dislike the messaging apps.

I almost hate to join just to ask if this issue has a solution but I would like the stock messenger to play sounds regardless. So is there a solution?

As far as I know from what I've been looking on different forums, no. No solution yet.
