Help Text Messages Disappearing

I fail to see why you are blaming Verizon. Clearly this is a software problem.

I agree.... when "apps" are failing, verizon has absolutely nothing to do with those at all.
But speaking of apps, all it takes is one crappy one to mess everything else up.

Write a list of your apps and start deleting the suspicious ones "you can reinstall them later", until your symptoms go away.. then go a couple of days to make sure.

Then start reinstalling one app at a time " preferably with time in between each install to give the offending one time to screw up" and you will see which one is the bad one.

Generally, I would put highest on the list of suspicion being those apps that are not popular as they are usually more likely to have bad code.
When hundreds of thousands of people run a popular app without trouble, its a good sign its ok.... if only a few hundred have downloaded the app, its in its infancy and subject to lots of problems still.

On my Droid Incredible it seems any time I get near 1000 texts with someone it will erase ALL of my texts from anyone ever. I will get a alert that I have a text message and than will look at my texts and see they have all cleared out, including the one I just received. I had the orig. Droid as well and it would do it on that phone as well, the only thing shared between the two phones is my 16gig SD card I saved from the Droid. I've looked into it and know this isn't normal behavior for Android phones but I've now had two phones that do it? I've gotta be overlooking something.

As far as I know the only setting for deleting old text messages is the "delete old messages" check box under message settings and I don't have that checked, is there some other setting I'm missing?

Edit: after some further research I found a thread noting the same issues but it sounds like most people in that thread are running handcent. I'm currently on the stock sense messaging app

I can say that I run handcent and have experienced the same issue 3 or 4 times. Fortunately my texts aren't what you would call "critical" so it's just annoying more than anything.

About two weeks ago my girlfriend called me in a panic because all her text messages were gone. Having never heard of this issue I had her reboot the phone but nothing came back. This morning I woke to find that now all my messages were wiped out too. Apparently Lookout doesn't back up messages so I'm unable to retrieve them that way.

Does anyone know what causes this and if there's a way to retrieve them?

Any help is appreciated.

Well...it happened again last night. Woke up this morning and all my text messages...including ones locked were gone again. 4th time this has happened to me since Froyo update. I called Verizon and HTC and it's a known problem with the Froyo software for the Incredible. Verizon stated it's a problem with the software so there's not much they can do about it and HTC said they are working on solving the problem. I ask that anyone else with this issuse please call HTC tech support (1-866-449-8358). The more calls they get hopefully the more priority they'll place on fixing this problem.

That's a bummer dude. I'll certainly call if mine disappear. Oddly enough though, I've never experienced a loss. The problem must not be pure Froyo... it's Froyo and something else that not all of us have loaded.... just a thought. Sorry about your loss.

How many texts do you have before they are getting deleted? The phone can only store so much. Use sms backup if you are that concerned. Don't hold your breath on HTC ever fixing it no matter how many people complain.

I have an Evo Shift 4g on Sprint. I also lost all text messages, so apparently issue is not carrier-related, but Android...?

I thought I had somehow pressed the wrong buttons in my sleep or something. I came here because my Quick Texts which I had customized considerably were all reset!
:(:confused::eek:
Now I see that the missing texts is apparently a 2.2 issue?
What again, is the consensus for best backup/preventative procedure for this?
Thanks~

I posted on the first page of this thread and now it's happened again-- all messages deleted. This makes 3 times now. Unbelievable. Using stock Messages app that came on HTC Incredible.

Does anyone have a legitimate solution to the problem?

If not, recommendations for a better SMS app? I'd prefer something simple, quick, and reliable. Obviously would like the ability to send pictures and videos as well. I'm sure there are plenty of apps out there-- I'm just unfamiliar with them.

I have never had this issue of vanishing txt threads, but have had the stock txt app force close once with no loss. I do have trouble with my clock jumping to GMT, which wreaks havoc on the chronology of my txt threads.

Took my Inc out of my pocket, was gonna send a text message to my sister using the stock message app, when the app opened up all my messages were gone. No rhyme or reason. I must have reached the limit, never deleted any text messages since having the phone.

i think i found a solution :D

factory resting your phone.
  1. Plug your phone into a computer>Turn on USB storage
  2. Go to computer> Removable Disk(E: )[may be different from others.Thats what it is for me]
  3. Make a new folder on your desktop called Phone
  4. Select all the folders/files in the Removable Disk(E: ) folder(aka your phones contents) > drag them to the Phone folder.Make sure they are in that folder!

Settings>Privacy
Under personal data>Factory data reset

also, go to your STOCK messaging app and see if the message limit is checked if so that may be the cause.Uncheck it.

Advanced Task Killer from Verizon previously recommended AND downloaded by them is now apparently wiping out ALL existing text messages from the android phone. Per Verizon.. nothing can be done, nothing can be recaptured..."sorry"= their only answer. In store rep told me, the other day he had a guy come in and his entire system had been wiped out. Known issue... yet no heads up to customer.

That only reinforces how poor their tech support is. I don't have ANY task killer installed and it has happened to me multiple times. Thanks for the relay though.

I own a Motorola Atrix that has been doing the samething for about a month. Nothing pisses you off more than to have directions to a business meeting suddenly deleted. The solution that worked for me was simple. I have the app called "History Eraser" installed on my phone. In the setting box was an option to delete incoming and outgoing sms messages. I unchecked both entries and believe it or not, it solved my problem. I hope it works for you.

I no longer am receiving any text messages. I can send text messages from my HTC Incredible but no one can send me text messages. I haven't called Verizon yet. It has been broken for a week now. I don't have an anti-virus. I didn't have any long threads with more than 15 or 20 messages. I only had a few people who used to send me text messages.

What's your software version say under the about phone section?

Almost anything to do, but you can avoid it will happen again :
on Messaging > Setting>General Setting you have probably Delete Old Messages checked :
This means that when the text message limit is reached (default is 200 but you can change it, sms are deleted automatically) . So disable this functionality (better) or rise the limit.

Morning Incredible users,
Morning Incredible users,

I want to know if anyone is experiencing the same issue and if they have any fixes. I lost all of my text messages three times since getting the phone last Wednesday. The first time, someone was trying to send me an MMS. It didn't go through, and caused a Force Close (for which you have no choice but to select OK). After the error, all my previous text messages were gone. I immediately installed SMS Backup and SMS Backup and Restore. I like that SMS Backup is almost instantaneous back-up (to your Google account), but you cannot restore the messages to the phone. SMS Backup and Restore will back up your messages to your SDcard and restore, but it only runs at a pre-selected time (unless you manually sync before the selected time). Twice after the first error, I've been in the middle of texting and received the Force Close due to "Message Download Failure"; and after both times I lost all messages again. I was able to restore the older messages, but not the ones sent and received after the backup schedule. The only thing I've done is used SWYPE instead of the stock keyboard. But this seems like a network error. Help!!! Anyone!!! :(
