Help Text Messages Not Displaying Sender

skzb

Lurker
1. When I receive a text message on my M8, it shows the phone number and picture of the sender but not the name. The sender is in the phone contacts but the name does not show up on incoming text messages.

2. For senders without pictures in my phone contacts, only the number is displayed without the name. However, in both cases (i.e. for contacts with and without pictures in my phone contacts), when I tap on the sender's picture in the messages folder, the pop up shows the sender's name and contact numbers saved. It seems to be a synching issue between the messages folder and phone contacts

What's strange is that when the screen is locked, the sender's name is displayed on the home screen whenever I receive text messages, however once I unlock and go to the messages folder, only the sender's number is displayed.

The weird part is that after 5-10 mins, when I access the messages folder again, the sender's name is displayed. There seems to be a time lag in displaying the sender's name.

I have went thru everything I could think of and I've already done a factory reset, however, the issue is still there. Am I missing something??

hi,
i dont get that issue, but my contact pics do randomly disappear in the messaging app :/

I've sent the phone to the Service Centre, they've provided me a new handset; however the issue is still there. What should I do next?

If it has persisted beyond a factory restore AND a replacement device(!) then the problem has been extremely significantly narrowed down.

Messages actively gets your contacts information from the People application. People is populated with info from your Contacts which can be imported from multiple different sources.

How are your contacts stored and added to the new phone? From the SIM? Restored from Google/Gmail Contacts? Restored from Google device and settings back up? Manual back up file? You don't know?

Also, which device were you using before you got your M8? This could be an important detail.

I was using an LG P768 before the M8.

From the LG to the M8, I transferred all the contacts through the HTC transfer tool and all contacts were saved as "phone" contacts (as the phonebook source).

Before doing the factory restore, I backed up all the contacts on my SD Card, which I copied back to "phone" contacts. However the issue persisted after the restore.

When I sent the device to the Service Centre, I again backed up all the contacts on my SD Card, which I again copied back to "phone" contacts on the replacement one. Again, the issue was still there. So I deleted all the contacts from the phone and recovered them again from the SD Card, but this time I saved them as "Google" contacts (as the phonebook source)

However, the issue is still there till date.

My wife has also used the LG device before me and she transferred all her contacts through the transfer tool as well when she got her M7 and she hasn't faced any such issues till now

Appreciate your help

Try and go into your people app and add one of your contacts as a "Google Contact". When it prompts you what type of contact, select your gmail address.

That would be the only thing I can think of that could be causing this.

I use the default messenger with 4.3 and I'm having the same problem, but only with group messages. On individual texts, it displays the sender's name. On group messages, no sender's names or phone numbers are displayed. However, if I tap on the sender's picture, the sender's name and number shows up. And I can get a list of all participants in the group message.

Wouldn't be an issue except it's a hassle to determine who said what.

All my contacts were downloaded from my google contacts.
This seems like a setting issue with the messenger app, but not sure how to fix it.

UPDATE: By default hangouts is able to display the sender's names/numbers for the individual replies. So it definitely looks like an issue with the default messenger.
