Help Text messages won't scroll up, snaps back to newest

I just switched my own contact card photo to one on my local gallery (the problem persisted - the real problem being that the picture keeps refreshing in the messages screen, and every time it refreshes it goes back to the bottom), and then switched it BACK to the facebook photo option, and boom, flawless message viewing.

Did I do something wrong then? I did the same thing. Edited my contact card and changed my contact card picture to one that is in my own gallery.

Did you guys notice the lit up/down 3G arrows when this is going on too? Did this stop that as well? I'm thinking about giving it another try.
 
Okay I just tried it again. It was syncing all the contacts and having the text scrolling issue again, even with a gallery picture for my contact card.

I went in and edited my contact card and re-selected the same picture and the up/down arrows immediately shut off.

I'll keep you guys updated.
 
Pretty sure this is directly related to facebook syncing. I'll follow up later. At this time turning off facebook autosync and rebooting the phone has resolved my issues.

I tried the picture fixes as suggested and those didnt do anything. I still had the problem.

I didn't use my phone hardly at all last night. And my data transfer doubled from 256mb to 512mb overnight. So I figured the syncing apps were responsible somehow. I'm thinking that this is the 3G not being able to keep up with the amount of data its trying to sync from facebook. Perhaps even by the time its done syncing, its time to run the next sync, and it's just constantly transferring data. I have yet to confirm this. However that would explain why it is that when Wifi is enabled, after a couple minutes, the txt scroll issues go away. This could be because it can easily sync that amount of data over wifi, but over 3g it takes quite a while long. Just a thought.

I think the bottom line is this: If a photo keeps refreshing inside the Messaging app, the scrolling issue will occur. You need to get the photo to stop refreshing somehow. Edit the contact, choose another picture, link the contact to Facebook, etc.

Have you guys looked at the feature inside every contact where you can Link to Facebook? This is important because otherwise you will have duplicate contacts when your phone creates one contact from Google and the other from Facebook. Then you have the same name appear twice, one with a Google photo (or no photo), and one with a Facebook photo. The Messaging app may have trouble discerning between the two contacts because they both use the same phone number. This may cause it to refresh endlessly.

For me all it took was to manually link all my contacts to Facebook (including my own contact card). Open the People application, choose a contact, then look in the upper right corner for the Link icon. Click this icon to see all the duplicates that haven't been linked together yet.

When I first had this problem I tried disabling 3G and/or WiFi and that didn't correct the problem. Let me know if this helps instead.

Weird because I can set both the person im texting, and my picture to blank. Even though I have the persons profile linked correctly, it still has the problem.

I really think there is more to it then just making sure profiles are linked properly.

Thus far, all I can confirm for sure is that if you turn the facebook auto-sync off this problem goes away.
 
In fact, immediately after i turn auto-sync back on for facebook the problem comes back. It appears to be refreshing my picture repatitively, even though I have configured my contact photo to be a local image on my phone. (just in case you were wondering when I change it back to my facebook picture i still has this issue)

Also, when turning syncing back off, the phone doesn't stop trying to constantly refresh my picture until I reboot the phone.

You don't have to unlink your Facebook contacts. Just reset the photo associated with you (i.e. the photo that appears in your My Contact Card). Mine is still working and has been fine for the past 24 hours. Not to mention the performance of the messaging app seems improved because it doesn't have to keep refreshing my photo.

Okay after a couple days I'm extremely please to say this fixed the issue.

In my scenario I had FB contacts NOT synced and had a picture from my local gallery set as my contact card picture. When I synced with FB it started freaking out again even with the gallery picture selected. this gave me the impression it wasn't working. However, I went back into my contact card and just re-selected the exact same picture and it has been working perfectly the whole time.

Big Thanks to Marco for finding the glitch and the workaround.

We need to keep this thread going so more and more people report the issue. I feel that we are representing .01% of the people who are probably having this issue.
 
This was happening to me too. I fixed it by going into the accounts & sync to change all of my time sync for all of apps. I cant wait for the fix tomorrow.

I'm hearing it's not fixed with the update.

And FYI even if I change "my contact card" picture to a local one it still does not work.

LIterally the only thing that works for me is going into "manage applications" and force stopping the "people" program. That works every time.
 
Yup mine is doing it right now. First time on the new update. Only way around it is to go to manage applications and go to the People application and do a "force stop"
 
For me the issue seems to go away if I turn of my 4g and 3g radios. I have widgets for that, so it doesn't take long to do, but it's a hassle. I shouldn't have to do that in order to read old text messages!
 
Funny that i just stumbled onto this thread because this issue was driving me nutz.... thought it was just me. I found it very frustrating to try to scroll up to an old text only to have it pop back down.

Anyway, since i started using Handcent for my text messaging, i no longer have this issue. And the customizing is great. You guys should try it out!!!
 
I found that simply going to your contact card, tapping your picture and re-loading your same Facebook image fixes the problem. Hope that helps some people out. HTC Evo

Yea we discussed that. It's definitely one of the ways to temporarily fix it. I've still yet to find a permanent fix.
