If you go into Settings -> Sound -> Volume there is a little checkbox which will say something along the lines of Use Incoming Call Volume for Notifications. If you uncheck that, you will be able to set the volume for both independently.
If you then go into the messaging app, hit the menu button, then settings, you should see further notification options. You'll be able to set things like vibrate etc from there.
As for your album art, you could try this app. Never used it myself, but it gets a pretty good score on the market and has some favourable reviews.
