Hello and welcome to Android Forums! :)

You have several lines of defense. First use a password or pattern lock on your phone. That way if someone picks it up without your knowledge they won't have access to anything. Second, do not let people you don't trust use your phone. Third, if you receive messages that you consider sensitive or personal in nature, delete them if you don't want others to ever see them. Finally, there are apps that purport to offer security at the app level. I can't recommend any of them as I have never tried one. Perhaps if you asked in Android Applications - Android Forums someone else could make a recommendation.

Welcome to the forums!

I use Go SMS (free from the market) - an option in the messaging app is to move messages to the private inbox. The private inbox is password protected, so it offers a little more protection.

I have also heard of, but never used, an SMS app like Shady SMS (not sure if this is free or paid for) - as I haven't used it, I can't say how good/bad it is!
