Help text messaging layout

i'm pretty new to my Galaxy S2 but so far everything is pretty straight forward and i couldn't be happier however i do have a question. is there another layout for the text messaging. when the text box comes up it's about 4 lines or so and i can only see a couple lines of the previous texts. i'd like to see more of the previous texts and less of the text box. i've not had much of an opportunity to play with it.

You can try making the font smaller under messages settings so that it shows more text at one time. Also you can download third party messaging apps from the play store.

I don't know of a way, but I know what you're saying. Like dhughes said, most of us use 3rd party messaging apps. Handcent (my favorite) and GO SMS are probably two of the most popular ones.

FWIW, I checked the stock app compared to Handcent. Handcent showed about 1/2 screen of keyboard/your text and 1/2 screen of the message thread. The stock app showed only about 1/4 of the screen with the message thread, so I understand the frustration.

Mine is on ICS but I think GB was the about the same.
