Help Text Messaging problem

elze

Lurker
When using the Text Messaging app, often after I initiate a texting session the other persons reply will come in a new separate window instead of in the same window I initiated the text message in. This does not happen with all my contacts and not all the time and clears up from time to time, however it is very annoying because it happens frequently Anyone know of a fix? I have a DroidX with v2.3.3.

Kinda weird. I can think of 2 possible things.
Is it possible that you have someone listed as a contact twice? If so, it might be confusing your messenging app.

Also, does this happen when you send messages to a group? If so, then yes, you would have one thread for the sent group message and another for the individual replies.

I'm not sending a message to a group, so that's out. I also do not have two separate contacts. However, when I do look at the Contact information on my phone it also shows their Facebook profile information. So when I look at the contact it will show the Google Contact information at the top and as I scroll down it will also list what looks like information pulled from their Facebook profile.

Just to be clear, when you say a separate window, you mean a separate conversation thread, right? Not a pop up window?

If it is a separate thread, try using a different messaging app other than the stock app. (I'm assuming you're using the stock)
Check out Handcent or GoSMS. Both are very good IMO, and I like them better than the stock app.
See if you still get that problem using a different app.

Correct, a separate conversation thread, not a pop up window. Thanks for the recommended messaging apps. If I cannot figure out and correct the current problem with the stock app, I will try the apps you mention.

I have also experienced the same problem but only since the 2.3.3 update. Does anyone else know of a tech support release to fix this? also, I don't have any facebook info on these contacts (don't want it). The issue occurs with only a few contacts, but every time.

Hey buddy, I actually had the same problem, and just fixed it. The reason it arises, at least in my case, was because there were duplicate contacts. At first, this wasn't evident. Go to the offending person's contact in the Contact app. Press menu, and then edit. Here, you should see two things, a Google contact and a Facebook contact joined together. In my case, I had two Google Contacts (one with only a name and a note, which must have been added on accident when I updated contact data from facebook), and the facebook contact. While you are on the edit screen, press menu, and then Separate. This should separate all three contacts. You can then delete the Google contact with little to no information, and then Join the two remaining contacts (one facebook and one google) back together [you just do this by viewing contact, menu, edit, menu, join]. This fixed my problem immediately, without a reboot. If the data for the two Google contacts for the same person is split between the two, you can merge them on a computer to condense them into one.

Hope this solves your problem bud.
