Text Notifications dont make sound

I uninstalled WhatsAp a while back and from about that time haven't been getting sounds with text.
If checked system. sounds. notification
and system > sounds > volume > notifications.
I've tried a restart.

What about a factory reset? Then I would have to reinstall all my aps?

Hello and welcome to the Android Forums. What SMS app are you using? Also, some apps have a separate setting, within the SMS app, its self. Might want to check that out.

Have you checked notification settings within that app? Most message apps have their own notification settings (tone, vibrate, enable/disable) rather than using the system settings.

Not sure if you checked this, but maybe WhatsAp had installed their own notification sound and when you uninstalled it that sound file went with it, causing no sound to be played for notifications? I'd give it another look in settings/sounds/default notification sound. Just a thought

I use Line but in this case the Android one (Envelope Icon).

Check the notification settings within this app that you use. Android notification settings are within each app. The general notification settings you see are generally for default apps on your phone. If you use a third party app, it may override the general system notification settings.

Seems to be Hangouts that was the problem. I uninstalled it and heard the ring on the first text I sent.

I now want to put something louder in the notifications folder but I can't access it.

When you say you cannot access it, do you mean that you cannot access the notifications folder to put a new sound file there? If not, do you mean when you put a sound file in the notifications folder, you cannot access that new sound from WhatsApp?

I mean if I browse (windows explorer) I can't access the notifications folder. I used to be able to.

Can you move the sound files into another folder using Explorer and then on your phone use some other file manager utility (eg., ES File Manager) to move those files into the Notifications folder?

Notifications can be in several Places on the SDCARD one of them is in a folder called Notifications while another one could be Media/Audio/Notifications so you may have to dig a little in the file system if it is completely gone then probably unistalling one of the apps erased it. I have never had that happen but I guess it is possible.

Its easy enough to create the folder and add your notifications into it. then you can set the ones you want up.

I dont have a media folder. I made a notifications folder and it lets me select my sounds but doesn't play them. It looks as though other aps change things?
I would show my files (screen shot) but I don't have a way to upload the picture.

not sure if this is the issue but something you should check Open the Properties of one of the sound files on your phone with your Phones FileManager (ES File Explorer) check the permissions and see if anyone has been giving permission to use them if not give everyone read permission and they should start playing. If in fact that is the issue.

So far i haven't found anyway to access permissions. I downloaded ES File manager . select a notification but nowhere can I find a permissions option.

I did a factory reset with a backup. I also installed Zedge so I have a good choice of ringtones and notifications.
The downside of sedge is that you can't just go through the list in storage.
I missed a contact or two because (I didn't realise) you have a choice of google, device or sim?
