texting and 3g service?

Hi, it seems like every now and then when im texting my 3g service goes out and is now 1x.. i live in a small town so do you think this is normal? it has been doing this since i got it. I heard handcent is really good. is that more bugless then the default texting app on the droid?

while it is actually transmitting the SMS it will switch to 1X. That is normal for any phone.
