Help texting between Nexus 4 and iPhone 5

Other then Google Voice, what would be the best way to text between these 2 devices. My wife has the iPj5 and I just got the Nexus 4. We both have text blocking because of spam.

Does it have to be an sms app or can it be a messaging app? You could use whatsapp for messaging.

Google voice blows on iOS. I've found Trillian with a GTalk account works well,but messaging on iOS in general sucks. Apparently iOS does not handle the background processes nearly as well as Android does, I kept finding my background apps getting shutdown or put to sleep and not alerting on new inbound messages. Trillian seems to do a little bit better than others.

Note I'm basing this on an iPhone 4 and an iPad2 both with all the latest updates, YMMV.

I agree with whatsapp, it's an awesome messaging app. The only downside is your wife will have to pay for the app while you get it for free. Otherwise I think Skype is a good choice!
