Help texting issue

When I try to reply to one of my contacts I get the error message "insufficient digits" When I look at the view message details screen I notice that this contacts number doesnt have the area code. I can reply if I create the response as if it was new from my people list, which does have the area code included. I am certain that this is a setup problem somewhere in the phone but cant figure out how to correct it. Anyone else experienced this or have a solution to the problem. Thanks
