Texting out of the country

Hey guys,

I have a Droid Incredible through Verizon. I met a guy while going to Japan who has a USA number but has the ability to receive and send texts.

I was wondering if I get billed if I send or receive text messages? He is still in Japan and he uses an iphone.

I'm actually curious about this as well. I will be going to Mexico in a few weeks and would like to have access to my email, texts, emergency calls. Will using Google Voice take care of all this? Do I need to be connected to Wifi?

(I don't mean to threadjack, this info should be relevant for both of us)

I use Fring, talk for less then $0.05 per minute back to the states. I was paying 2 cents call Maryland from Brussels last month, works with WiFi so if you have any WiFi you can call home even from Micky D's anywhre in the world.

You have to check your plan to see what the charges are. You will basically you will be texting to a USA number from a USA number. You will also have to find out if his USA number is local to you or not and see what your plan is for sending and receiving texts from where you live to where in the US this other number is.

Will have to contact Verizon and see what their international rates are. Even if its US # to US # you will still be charged depending on where you are.
Went through this when I went on a cruise last spring. Depending on where you are, you have to piggy back on non Verizon towers for service, hence the non standard rates

What about using those messaging apps that don't use SMS? For instance, Beluga or PingChat! etc...
