Texting to 5-digit number

So I read somewhere, "Text ANDROID to 76666" to be notified when the Consumer Reports app is ready for Android. I go to Text Messaging, put "76666" in the To field and "ANDROID" in the message area, and his Send. The phone dings and notifies me, "Text message not sent."

What am I doing wrong?:confused:
 
thats exactly what you should be doing. Make sure you are supposed to text to the number 76666, and not the letters they represent on a standard keypad.
 
You're going to have to go into that etc. etc., because right now you're just pointing to scams USING premium text messaging. That's like saying e-mail is bogus because of Nigerian phishing emails.
 
Let me rephrase that: Some "Premium text" is a scam that charges you big bucks and doesn't need explicit authorization.
 
Ah, yeah, but my point was that texting to most 5-digit numbers is counted as "premium texting," and if you have premium texting disabled you won't be able to text to them. That could be the issue here.

I realized all this a few years ago when I sat idly by, depressed and emasculated as all my friends used chacha with hilarity.
 
Many don't know that 5x is premium and the charges are often less than apparent until the bill comes. Even an "unsubscribe" response can imitate a charge ...
