Help TFT Not OLED?

Been reading some reviews online stating get an older stock model as the newer ones have an TFT Screen and Not OLED??

Anyone know anything about this?

What you have read is correct. ZTE cant get enough OLED screens from samsung, so switched to the TFT screens recently.

If you buy online direct from orange you will almost certainly now get a TFT. Also, As far as I know they only do the white ones in TFT anyway.

If you dont mind the original Grey one, your best bet is to try and find an orange store with some old stock left, Ive read reports of some still having OLED ones.

Its Worth trying the small orange stores that are inside HMV stores ;)

Be quick because lots of people are now hunting down the remaining OLED ones!

Cheers

Thanks for your reply Master_Yoda!

I do want the "original" Grey one, the White one just doesn't do it for me!
What would be the difference in TFT And OLED?

One other question does the Screen have a nice quick responsive touchscreen? The type you don't have to press "hard" to use it?

Also would TFT make it less responsive Mate??

Thanks

Black is black on the OLED, but more grey on the TFT.

The TFT is ment to have a better touch controller and sharper text.

If you intend to root the ROMS for the OLED Version wont work on the TFT version, so note that.

Cheers

TFT stands for Thin Film Transitor, are indicates an actoive matrix. TFTs are used for LCDs and AMOLEDs. There are a very limited number of smartphones with AMOLEDs because of limited supply , which should change next year. If you want to buy a product with an AMOLED, make sure you choose the super AMOLED where the touch screen is embedded in the display and not placed on top of the display. The embedded touch uses less power and have reduced reflection from the ambient light so are much better in sunlight and are brighter

Sorry this is the San Francisco section of the forum and they are not available with a super AMOLED screen unfortunately!

Am not quite sure here what you are trying to say: "...for the OLED Version wont work on the TFT version."

I'll try and make it as clear as possible for you..

If you decide to root your San francisco and install a custom version of the Android operating system (what I refered to as a ROM in my earlier post), you will need to find the correct ROM's for the TFT version of the San Francisco, the ROM's for the OLED version of the San Francisco dont work on TFT version.

Hope you understand now.

NOTE: This only matters if you intend to Root your phone and install a custom ROM, if you dont then simply ignore this.

Cheers

Hi,

I`ve just got one from online but not sure whether it is TFT or OLED. Are there any ways to find which versions I do have now? Thanks

Wow that is a shame they come with TFTs now. Not surprised though and still great value for money.

I have an AMOLED Desire and a TFT San Fran, can't say I notice much difference between how the screens respond to be fair. Both are responsive, the TFT seems slightly more 'glossy' with colour but that's not a complaint, and sometimes there's a slight stall when swiping between homescreens. I blame the 2.1 base ROM and the 600mhz processor for that, rather than a problem with responding to touch input.

Had a chance to play with the TFT and the Oled screens on this phone.
Observed the following facts.

1) Oled is as bright at 3rd position on brightness slider as full position on the TFT
2) Whites are more greyed on the TFT at any brightness setting.
3) Oled is possibly too vivid or intense on colours but will have to compare against a photo.
4) Screen quality is about equal.

I would appreciate any other comments that distinguish the screens on these phones or perhaps you don't agree with the above comments!

To everyone that has just got a new San fran this christmas and is now worried about what screen you have..... dont.... it doesn't matter. Have you got anything to compare it too.. no... then it doesn't matter. Just a quick note though compared to my HTC Hero which I presume does not have a TFT screen (my San Fran does) you have to press it slightly (only slightly) harder.

so dyu kno the rooting with the ROM's Modaco shows is that for OLED SF's or for TFT SF's????

and if its for OLED then how do you root TFT SF? where would i find info on which ROMS to use?

thnx for the help :)

Just to clarify, your Hero does have a TFT screen, actually a lower quality, lower resolution screen than the SanFran.

With regard to the TFT vs OLED debate, if you like very vivid over the top colours try and source an OLED model, if you prefer more natural colours on a sharper, more precise to the touch screen, look for the LCD model. (My comments are based on having had both, I sold the OLED model because I found it too unnatural).

Go to Settings > About Phone > Build

OLED Screens have Android build B05 whereas TFT Screens have build B08 :)
