That's it - I'm probably done with the X2

I had the phone reboot during a call for the third time today. This, along the with myriad of other issues that aren't getting remedied are pushing me away from the DX2. I really like the form factor/hardware build quality of the DX2, but all the glitches are driving me crazy.

I traded an Incredible 2 within the 14 day trial period for the X2, assuming Motorola had their sh!t together. This is obviously not the case. I would have returned it immediately had I known Motorola was going to ignore the software issues on the phone.

What are my options to go back to an Incredible 2 at this point through Best Buy, if any?

How was the incredible 2? I was thinking either that or the TB, well I did a factory reset on my phone and it hasn't restarted since, I think I installed a third party app that wasn't 100% compatible with the phone yet? Ever since the restart I haven't had a single reboot/bug, maybe give that a try.

I had some major issues prior to that though and if it starts happening again I am probably gonna try and find someone to do a swap. If they won't let you return it for something else at that point I think the only option is that, find someone that wants to do a swap with you, or sell it outright for whatever amount and use that to buy the phone you want. Craigslist or here has the phones a lot cheaper than retail so you should be fine with picking another up fairly cheap.

If you don't like the X2, I'll wager you're not going to be much happier with the D3. The only "advantages" are the hardware keyboard and OMAP instead of Tegra.

I have some frustrations with the X2 as well, but IMHO there aren't any other phones available on VZW that I like any better. Seems to me they all have some flaw that makes them less than stellar.

For now, I'm just waiting for a dev to come up with a "fix" for the X2 shortcomings. #1 on my wish list is better memory management -- both RAM and partition usage.

If it was more stable, I'd consider it. I really like the reception I get with the X2 and assume the 3 would have similar results. If the Droid 3 has flaky software like the X2, no thanks.

Probably?

Yeah, I know. I say "probably" as once I make the statement that I'm getting rid of the phone, a miraculous update will come out that fixes all the major issues and I end up keeping it. Needed to inject some Obama politics into the decision to cover my bases. Oh wait, that would mean you need to give me money to pay for my data plan, and feed momma baby.

Its possible that GPU is the cause of the problem. I've read that 108 MB of the system RAM are reserved for the GPU. It's possible that such a significant amount of RAM being resreved causes the problems we've been experiencing. To me that would likely mean two possible solutions:
1) More efficient use of RAM by the OS (I think gingerbread qualifies, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
2) To use less of the RAM for the GPU (I have no idea if that is something a firmware update can adjust).

I'm optimisitc that the problems can be fixed, but I'm pessimistic that they will be fixed quickly enough for me to keep this phone.

Also, I would suggest not getting the Droid 3. If motorola doesn't want to invest time in fixing the X2's problems, switch to a different manufacturer. Don't reward them with another purchase.

I have been waiting patiently for verizon\motorola to come out with a droid that doesn't have a boat load of problems...I'm still on my droid 1, I've tried just about every rom out there...non of the GB roms work right...and even the froyo have bugs....

don't get me wrong, it's been a cool device but I'm sick of "force closes" , freezing and quirkiness...even with stock roms...this is where I think the iphone shines...it's stable and software devs only have to support 1 piece of hardware, not hundreds.

I wanted the x2, but after reading of all the problems I'm holding off for a more stable device, the droid 3 looked cool but now I see it also has issues...now I'm holding out for the bionic...but now I'm not even sure on that....

I hate to say it, as I really love android...but I think I'm going to go get the iphone...even though I can't stand apple and steve jobs....the device just works...even if it's locked down!

android has come a long way, but I think there are too many different hardware platforms for devs to deal with to make it a stable os for every device....this is where the iphone is going to win, and I am in no way a apple phanboy!

I do IT work every day and don't mind messing around with a device, but most of the time I just need my device to work. so far that has not been the case for my OG Droid, and judging by what I'm reading on the newer droids it doesn't look hopeful.....hardware has evolved and os is evolving but the two need to be one and just plain work!

Hmmmm,no, I must say I respectfully disagree on the D3 having "only" those two improvements (OMAP & keyboard). I have been heavily researching the matter lately and feel the D3 in its current form has a number of small but significant benefits over the DX2:

-1080p video recording
-Overall better/improved 8Mp camera stills
-Front-facing cam
-Stock Gingerbread
-Newer/better/faster Gingerblur UI
-Better/newer camera app
-Available inductive charging battery door
-16Gb internal storage
-A bit better assortment of bloatware

I am going to spend some serious hands-on time over the next few days with a D3 and I may try to see if moving to a D3 from my DX2 is worth the $ hit and losing my THD games and big screen. Otherwise, I may do the same thing when the Bionic arrives.

don't forget global as well. For most that isn't a perk for me it is. Also think down the road...the DX2 doesn't even have GB yet but the D3 does....now which one do you think will get ICS first?.....

Agreed that the two mentioned improvements from the DX2 were just a part of them (Might get a D3 today).

Still, this is a DX2 forum and the DX2 has tons of potential that the root community may be able to tap. Non-rooters could remain "cursed" with accumulating lag, audio pops and random reboots. If the Gingerbread update fixes the current issues, the DX2 will be a great device- without root.

I have a Tegra 2 tablet, so still have my Tegra Pinball game, but due to the fragmentation, will NOT buy another app that is specific to ONE chipset. That seems pure stupid to me and bad for the software devs. It is NOT a Tegra 2 OS, it is of course Android.

Now that I've been using my DX2 for the last week I can comment on some of these problems. I am rooted, running V6 supercharger (with custom settings 6,20,100,70,80,90), using SD speed increase app (2048 setting), and have run a script to change the mapping of the sd card and internal memory being seen backwards by the DX. Basically every problem seems to have been cured with these fixes. I average around 100 free ram (I have 100 set in the
v6 script for free ram), and audio skips are gone. I have also frozen most of the bloat and this phone flies compared to my DX. Just smoother/quicker overall. Camera and video I have no issue with. Really, at this point I have a dual core DX with a brighter, richer colored screen. So as of now I am happy. I will wait and see how the Bionic fares once it is in users hands. I may use my available upgrade on the Bionic, but it would have to be a worthy phone to do that.
