The 2.1 Speculation Thread

Yeah, what ever licensing deal that Sprint has with Nascar and NFL, etc., won't be left out of the 2.1 upgrade for sure. I find it frustrating to have to deal with this...

I wonder if this will ever be challenged in court? I mean on par with Microsoft force feeding you their web browser. Why are we inundated with software we have no control over when we are REQUIRED to purchase the handset we will use to purchase airtime and other services from the carrier??? Let alone on this particular OS which "IS" open source and as such leaves me the option to add to it as I see fit.

I'm getting tired of hearing about the 2.1 update and fail to see why it is such a huge thing for people... Everyone should be more concerned about the restrictive practices of the Cellular Carriers and their continued anti-trust and restraint of trade practices...

There is nothing to challenge in court. MS provides the single most used operating system in the US so it fall under anti-trust laws. With phones you have a choice of multiple OSs, multiple carriers, and multiple plans per carrier. Since there are multiple carriers that actively compete against each other there is not any anti-trust issues. To top that off you can buy a phone, from any carrier, without a contract and not buy their services. You even have a choice between CDMA and GSM carriers if you want. Sure you can't use a GSM phone on a CDMA network but that is a technical restriction and not a business practices issue. Furthermore Sprint not allowing third party devices on their network is not a restraint of trade practices or anti-trust since you have options. You can simply go with a less restrictive carried.

The phone's OS is open source but that doesn't mean you can do what you want with the installed system. All Open Source means if that you can get the source and modify it to your liking. HTC could make a phone that required a special device to flash, sell the device only to Sprint thereby making you come into the store for updates with no other way to get them and they could still use Android on the phone and Android would still be Open Source. You can add to the OS as you see fit but the hardware is not Open Source and the load itself is not Open Source only the OS. You can add to your phone as you see fit by rooting your phone but the trade off is that you lose support and rightfully so. No-one should be expected to support, beyond manufacture's defects, anything that an end used can modify as you can once you root a phone. It would be overwhelming for support and practically impossible. Even Dell when providing RHEL on servers only supports the shipped configuration in the stated use. If you add functionality or remove daemons and so on you pay for every bit of support out of pocket.

An industry as a whole cannot be guilty of anti-trust and as their is massive competition in the space there isn't a legitimate argument for restrictive trade. You have plenty of choices and just because there isn't one that fits your ideal doesn't mean there is anti-trust or restrictive trade practices going on.

You don't NEEED McDonald's but they will be sued for a Monopoly. They will also be sued if they hurt the consumer. Your point is hard to tell, but cell phone companies don't get an easier time because you don't NEED them. The poster was talking about them violating your rights!

While I get your point of being "ok" with the phone that you don't NEED, this is money being spent, and the law is made for a reason. Laws like the 4th amendment may only be applied to things you NEED (i.e. car not included as well) but monopoly and shady business practices would go to a non-necessity phone.

Sorry for the rant, I hate legal misconceptions and I'm not a techie, but I know that stuff :)

No monopoly involved. At worst you might get collusion on rates or ETF fees but there is more than enough competition in the space to disprove monopoly claims easily. (See above post)

I JUST got my hero... about 2 or 3 weeks ago, my software version is 1.56.651.2

I've been hearing stuff about Droid 2.0 and 2.1... .

THEN I did some google searching about it, for the hero, and found "leaked" versions, but I don't know if I trust them...

I just wanted to see when/if this is going to be available....

and what kind of upgrades are going to be included in said upgrade.

well...that seems to be the million dollar question. and the millionth time it's been asked today.

I recommend ya do a search and read the masses of threads that will come from it.

I kinda did, (THEN I did some google searching about it, for the hero, and found "leaked" versions, but I don't know if I trust them...)

But didn't really find much info other than how to do it... but not if it's for the sprint Hero...

it's all covered in previous threads and I'm not sure I'm the guy to try to explain it because I'm not the most technical guy. That being said...there is no official update, the leaked versions are incomplete and from what I have read they do not all function properly. At the moment the best option I could find, if you don't want to stay stock, is Fresh 1.1 and there are a TON of threads about it and how to do it.

Yeah, if you want something new I'd say go with Fresh 1.1 and just wait for 2.1 to be legit released. And if you want to stay with a custom ROM then it won't take long after release for one to be made with 2.1 on it. Otherwise there won't be a Sense UI and it'll probably be more buggy than its worth.

there are a couple versions of 2.0/2.1 out there.. IF you do decide to give one a try, make sure it's a version for the CDMA Hero.. not the GSM Hero.. there's a CDMA version over at the XDA forums, but not everything works on it..

as far as will the Hero get 2.1..... yes... when... sometime between today and the end of June..

What will the upgrade include... no one knows

Android:Sprint's Update on Android 2.1

This is good news. As a developer myself, I understand the testing phase means that they are getting closer. They are probably going to be a little extra cautious this time around after all of the major bugs that the Hero had when it was first launched. I also understand that exact dates cannot possibly be given out. You put out a release date as a worst case scenario (1H 2010) and then if things get wrapped up earlier than expected, great! You have to fit extra de-bugging into a planned release schedule.

Be patient and understand that one of the major features of the Hero is the Sense UI. HTC has had to re-develop and test this functionality on top of Android 2.1. If everything goes smoothly, maybe we will get 2.1 by the end of March or even February. I would say we mostly likely will not have to wait until June.

I think well see it after the 1st quarter. The GSM version will get it before the CDMA phones, plus Sprint has already said first half of the year. I hope I'm wrong, but I am thinking May.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting this link! Repped!

I dunno I use 2 of the Sprint apps a lot: Navigation and NFL... free NFL network games? Home-station radio broadcasts of all games? Pretty good for "bloatware". And obviously Google Nav may render Sprint Nav unnecessary, but it has been nice having free navigation software while say for example those w/ the Droid Eris have to pay VZW 10 bucks a month for the privilage...

Thanks for this. I may have removed some of the Sprint apps that I don't use, but I get a little tired of people calling them worthless crap and bloat. I know that's the nature of the net, but people... not everything SUCKZ or ROKZ!!!ELEven...

WE have to understand we HAVE truly become a nation of the entitled

Quoted for truth, well said.

The fact that the post @BAW above says it's in TESTING is GOOD news.

Basically, quit'cher bitching, and wait for the software test team to do their thing.

It's coming.

They pushed a hoop around.

With a stick.

A stick...

To think I was running around playing with play guns, riding a bike and having fun. Here I now find I missed out on the whole hoop craze.

Yes I would like a update, and tomorrow would be nice. But, I'll wait.....

I heard the other day that instead of waiting for the OTA update from Sprint, one can "google" Android 2.1 and install directly from Google. Does anyone know if this is solid information? I would assume that you would have to do alot of the phone programming that is bypassed with the OTA install, but, hey, if it works, why wait for Sprint?

No SenseUI or total compatibility yet. You can view the "Latest custom ROM" sticky for the 2.1 ROM.
