(Or the Desire/Milestone, for that matter. The Galaxy S may just be more expensive than it, but the Galaxy S is also much more powerful and hot off the press compared to a one-year-old 3GS.)

Nowadays if anyone is interested or questions my Droid relative to the iPhone, I tell them both are indeed excellent phones, and they should try each out themselves-- or in the case of Android, try the various hardware options, too. My personal decisions shouldn't trump the feel and sensation they get from actual experience.

I also explain that Android phones and the iPhone, while different, are also very comparable devices, and readily let them tool around with my device, answer questions, and reinforce how the competition between the two has produced great innovations and huge leaps in both OS's. I usually finish up by saying neither OS would be where it is today, without the other, so try both and go with what works.

Android is only going to grow, so I feel nothing is lost with this approach, as it only comes off as defensive if I start trashing a device which is an obvious mainstream success (Apple does deserve its success, IMO). So long as Google is chasing Apple, I'm benefiting as the consumer (Froyo taste great, looking forward to Gingerbread, thanks), and the better product will outdo the other in due time.

This is a good post. The iphone is a fine product, but I also believe the Android to be a fine product as well... I love mine. However, what one person likes, and what another person likes may differ quite a bit. The best way to find that out is through using them. I have had my ipod touch a little longer than I have had my Android, so having used both products I can say I prefer the Android and will be sticking with it, but to rag on someone else for their opinions/preference is pretty silly if you ask me.

Maybe it got better but the problem with mobile office was that if you edit the doc you would lose the advanced formatting while doc2go kept it intact. These office alternatives were able to do better in the WinMo world than Office alternatives for the PC (such as the once mighty Wordperfect).
IE is an even bigger loser as it was replaced with Opera on HTC phones and it's not going to happen on Blackberry, IE and Android.

Even after taxes, it can't be much more than, what, 420 GBP? That's for a five-month-old phone that continues to hold its own (and gets fantastic performance optimization too, thanks to the 2.2 OTA that just started rolling out) compared to a one-year-old, outdated piece of shit. Five months ago, on the very dawn of its release, the N1 was also $530 (I was astonished at how very cheap it was for a latest-and-greatest piece of kit) compared to about $740 for an unlocked 3GS 32GB. Android users have never been an "elitist club," son. Barking way up the wrong tree.

And as everyone's pointed out, you could've sold your Hero, thrown in a bit of spare change and get yourself your precious, precious iPhone. If you're allergic to anything non-Apple, it was your fault in the first place for settling with the very thing that gave you rashes.

Just want to clarify, or at least remind everyone that, as much as I enjoy hearing people debate the merits of both phones, my original post was not about how one phone is better than the other, but it seems this thread has been hijacked to go in that direction anyway.

There are merits to both phones, but I prefer Android.

My original post is not about the iPhone, but about iPhone fanboys. It is my thesis statement that mindless fanboyism (new word!) is detrimental to the advancement of Android, not necessarily because iPhone is better than Android (which is not the argument) but because the marketing/PR/brainwashing that surrounds the iPhone causes people to reject even the notion of trying Android.

My anecdote was about 1. an iPhone fanboy spewing the usual marketing drivel as a justification for refusing to even look at Android; and 2. A bystander with NO phone saying that he should get an iPhone "because it easier to use", this being an example of how the Fanboyism is affecting the proper decision-making tree for consideration of one over the other.

If a potential consumer looks at the list of factual features and differences between the phones, and chooses the iPhone because of the facts then there is nothing wrong with it. In the end, these phones do so much the same that the real differences between them make the choice one of personal preference.

If a potential customer chooses an iPhone because they've bought into the Marketing slogans, such that they believe things that aren't necessarily true and without being even willing to consider the alternatives (and the factual comparison between them) then that is what causes me the most aggravation.

I am not debating the differences between iPhone and Android, I am arguing that it is counterproductive (and illogical) to choose any gadget because of "hype" then because of a full examination of the actual features in a comparative manner.

I started this thread with a COMPLETELY different discussion in mind. Can we please at least consider having that discussion instead of rehashing the same old pi$$ing contest?

Non-issue. Froyo enables apps2sd, there're many app devs who are already taking advantage of this. In addition, games that require some 100-150MB of additional data generally save that data to the sdcard.

Plus, even if you buy say a 16GB card, the difference added up still won't be anywhere near the difference in price between the 3GS and an N1, and that's not taking into account the N1's superior processor, RAM, camera, etc.

I don't disagree that the phone debate can bring out the "fanboyism", the difference seems, however, to be that most Apple "fan boys" (who are the "technical" sort ie. the common person) argue using marketing rather than factual information about the phone, whereas Android fanboys tend to argue the merits of the phones, not the marketing.

This may be, I suppose, because the majority of Android users might more of the "technical" persuasion than the average common iPhone user?

Actually, depending on a few variables, including choice of browser, os, etc, the ads are based on your browsing history using stored "tracking cookies" on your local machine. For instance, on my friends computer, the ads that actually show up are car related and have no relevance to android or phones at all =].

I'm using IE8 and mine will be phone related as I've been doing a lot of phone related searches just prior to taking up my Desire contract lol. However at no point (again not bashing it) did I look at the iPhoneor related material apart from the odd comparison youtube vid such as those done by PocketNow.com.

The iPhone 4 drops calls if you hold it by the bottom-left corner.

Whats best for the internet? Well since OSX STILL doens't render a sizeable portion of the web correctly, (tables, some css, and Flash), so what makes you think the stripped down version of OSX that is aka iOs which will never support flash(as of now) can do any better than the piss-poor job OSX does? Granted OSX is getting better but there are still some layout issues, and massive flash incompatibilities on intensive flash applications.

Whats better if you just want phone calls? A jitterbug.

Email and web? Android generally, unless your using Cisco VPN, which is being worked on. But all ten of my IMAP inbox's sync beautifully on Android.

You have lied in these forums, you are a hypocrite, and IMO you're a nasty example of the worst kind of 'fanboy', because while you may have a preference you wish to extol about, in this case Android, I think you actually enjoy attacking people for their 'bad' choices too.
